I found a bunch of great tutorials on her for little brooder boxes, and we went with one in a dog kennel. I bought my supplies yesterday.

Also, yesterday I found out that my uncle has a ton of chickens! I didn't know! My grandfather had a huge farm with tons of chickens and cows and horses. I didn't realize my uncle still had it!

I don't have chickens yet. We can't wait though! We are trying to buy or have someone build a coop first. My three year old has already named one Rapunzel and we haven't even bought them yet. I joined here because I want to learn a lot. We have two cats, a dog, and a husband (that counts as a pet, right?). We have two daughters, a 3yo and a 6mo.

When you get your chicks, get them used to the noise/ commotion of the dogs/cats/people. Mine started out in a kiddie pool in my living room. Until that got too messy. They cant act afraid of the anything, if they act spooked, the animals will chase them. (and eat them) My dog would stick his head in their brooder and sniff around. I even fed him treats that he had to eat out of the brooder. Now that they are free range in my yard, with both dogs, they are not fearful of him (they do keep 5ft away if he is standing)

I imagine if one of them panicked, he would give chase and eat the chicken.

That is a great idea, I was nervous about how my dog would react. She is very sweet, but still an animal. My original plan was to just keep her inside while the chickens were in the yard. I can try to train her though.

Good training goes a long way. I have active bird hunting dogs that protect my flock. I have not lost a bird yet to them however, if I cull a bird they do try to take off with it after it is plucked.

Uuummmm....so I have a lone quail here a customer threw in a box and said enjoy him he's the last one! Uuum tried to say no...

Edit: through some searching I see its a Male coturnix quail/Japanese quail. Common so I should be able to search out a mate! Hey looks like we may offer quail next year ain't that how it starts?

I set him (assuming because all free birds I get are hims lol) in his own lil cage (wasn't prepped for a big cage or "quail" cage!) With some high protein feed and water. He's really friendly. Weird because I thought quail were scardy cat birds this one hops over and investigates like a chick.
Anyone know what kind of quail?
What do I do with it? Lol looks so small to eat, friendly happy lil guy. Can I keep him alone for a few weeks? A mates not readily available to me.

Hey to all out there!!! We finally got our babies. We went to see Brandy and her Orpingtons.we decided to pick 3 . One for each kid.

I don't know if I added the pics right.

My three kids named. Dominick is 2 years old and named his lavenders orp. Coocoo, My 7 year old wanted the mottled orp. She named her Duchess Evenessa of Metairie ( Evie), and my 5 year old son named his black orp. Drew Brees( even though she's a girl) .

Already in love with these birds.. Good thing for birthdays and anniversary presents.. I guess that's the guilt free way to get more chickens.. Hee-hee!

Might need to revise my coop after reading some of these threads.

congrats on your new flock! Next time you might want some a little younger if your in it for eggs. They start slowing egg production around 2 1/2 years. You will love these people. We're all chicken crazy. Pam

It looks full size to me. I have found that they prefer 20% crumble. Don't put too many together because they will cannibalize each other. Mine like to be pet and will come to the door and put their sides towards me to be picked up. Make sure the roof is 12" and less or 3' and over as noises spook them and they can snap their necks on the heights between. You might want to consider a wire bottom cage as they poop often and it is real moist. I don't know how they fare alone.
