"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thanks for the warm welcome. I can't wait for the chicks to arrive... should be here any day now.

Along with my chicks, my grandfather will be getting 6 SLW, 3 BO, 3 Speckled Sussex, 5 Black Australorp, 5 Golden Buff, and 2 Roos; a Barred Rock and a New Hampshire Red.

Like i said, I am new to chickens, but my grandfather has raised them all his life. I just recently completed his coop... 10x10 with four nest boxes and 25 foot of roosts. will post pics as soon as i can.

Currently we have the brooder sitting in the middle of the coop, on top of two sawhorses. i was wondering if anyone has had problems with the heat or what... will post pics of this as well. I am asking because he wants to keep the brooder outside with the heat lamp, and draft-proof it. i just don't want to end up with overheated chicks.

One more question... does anyone have their chickens co mingling with dogs. My fiance would like for our puppy to basically live with the chickens (and ducks in the future lol) for protection. We have many coyotes in the area and I feel this is a good idea as well. just wondering how I should introduce the puppy to the chicks

puppy will need LOTS of training. I think it would be ok to keep the brooder the way he wants. Mine is kept outside. My lamp is on one side so if needed, they can get away from the heat

Busy today. Planted curly/straight grasses under the remaining maple.

Planted strawberries where the maple was I had to cut down.

Planted Angel's hibiscus.

The Easter Lillies are in bloom.

And, FINALLY I moved the coops into the shelter. The girls were very excited and couldn't wait to climb in and check it out. It is all wired for an oscillating fan when it gets hotter. The little cage on top is where Angel's baby will sleep at night until she is bonded with Prim, then they'll coop together in the coop under the temp cage. Now that that is done I will finish Jo-Maxing the exterior walks and repaint and finish decorating the chicken yard.

Yes, it is possible but requires more training then most are willing to commit to. You have to get both the dogs to accept the chickens as part of their pack and get the chickens to accept the dogs as flock protector. If the chickens fear the dog then they will run and get chased. Start early with the dog laying down put the chicks next to its head. Make sure your hand is right there so there are no problems. Once the dog has mastered that with no more then grooming the chicks you can start putting the chicks on its back. My bird hunting dogs groom the butts of my girls so it is not unusual to see grooming but you want to make sure it is nothing more then that. After the dog has lost any interest with the chicks on its back you can sit in a pen with both the chicks and the dog. Let the dog move around but keep a close eye on it. Because you have a puppy training can take a little longer. Good luck!
