"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Heads up Louisianan's. We are clearing a clearing out in our woods. Moving a coop to the corner of the forest here. Thus providing ample shade . Rain Barrels going in to water on auto waters and a guardian dog possibly. We love our dog and she's an awesome alarm but we need defense for the meaties we are going to jump back into :gig 40 ordered and we haven't even ordered the chicks. They don't care, they're waiting in line for more chicken and we have found a way to free range in a shaded area, so we are placing a large order of chicks and doing another batch. They are Cornish cross chicks and the more we order the cheaper it gets and the lower the cost. So if anyone wants chicks let me know. No minimum (we already hit that) no shipping charges because we got free shipping - BUT we don't ship ourselves, don't know if we are allowed too so can't. So before I DO order does anyone here want any "at cost" - which I will be able to look up in a moment- sorry shoulda had that info der! Let me know. We deliver free locally and can meet on occassion in near by towns. I'm in baton rouge area.

We are going to be paying $1.78 per chick so far. So they are $1.78 each.
We need to hit 75 order for $1.68 per chick -this is what we want to pay every 3 month to keep our costs for finished product lower.
At an order for 100 we would be paying $1.46 each chick. Awesome price but we only need maybe 65 every 3 months to cover our friends and family at Southern Pastures and we don't freeze much meat. Anyone looking for like 30ish chicks at $1.46 price? :lau maaaaan we only grow what we need tho

Anyone know the name of Celies rabbitry? I have pedigrees going now on our 3rd & 4th generations and I'd like to credit her to a few of our breeders we got from her lines. They're awesome and she should get the breeder recognition for them. :)

So excited about my new tractor style coop. The only issue I have been round about with is that there is no floor, to speak of, in the coop. Obviously there will be no cleaning the bedding out the coop, that's a plus! I just need to move it every few days. What are y'all's thoughts about this? I'm sure we could always modify it to have a floor but do I need it? I'm thinking without one ventilation is a non issue bc no airflow is impeded. Here are some pics and let me know what you think. Note: I took the nest boxes out until a further time that my girls will be so inclined. That would be in about two months. :)

Now all the doors fold down, solid on top and hardware on the bottom. We have installed an auto door on the side as well.

They are enclosed by an electrified poultry net so no problems with predation so far.

Great looking coop. I have a chicken tractor that started off with a 2x4 wire bottom. I removed after about 6 weeks as I felt it was more of a problem than anything else. When I removed it the chickens ate a lot more grass. I would keep an eye out for any signs of something digging either around the coop or perimeter electric fencing and re-evaluate if you find anything. If you already know you have digging predators in the area, my answer will be a little different.

Anyone know exactly what kind of cherry this is? I would like to start some from the seeds. But I know I will have better luck if I am able to research the exact kind of bush and how they germinate. The gentleman that we got them from just called them wild cherries. They sure are tasty! I know they have made jelly out of them for many years and the bush we picked these from is over 40 yrs old.

The doggies were begging for a sample

Kind of cruddy pictures. But they have a slight pattern almost like the muscadine have the tiny gold specks.

I put the coops facing each other in the shelter bec they wouldn't fit in the shelter side by side. The backs of the coops are solid wood and when they were facing each other the orientation prevented air flow. So today I started cutting the coops down so they could be side by side. I was so proud of myself even though it was a lot of work. Everything was fine until I went to open the coops and the posts were in the way and I couldn't open them! Dang! After much thought I decided to cut ventilation holes in the back and cover in hardware cloth and put the coops back facing each other. Phew. I think we're good now for the summer.

I had a wild cherrie tree. The berries are darker. smaller.and had a tart taste. And they came off a tree not a bush. Good luck finding what they really are. Pam

Thanks. I left a message. I have her and her husbands business card but it states "small animal farm" and I wasn't sure if that was their nane or 'what they did' or both and didn't want to guess :) facts only for this project.
