Ok! Guess I shoulda posted more pics! Will clarify...haha...the too of the roof is framed hardware cloth, the front door, side window and back window are all old cypress windows that I busted the glass out of, refinished and covered in hardware cloth. The chicken door for them to exit the coop is actually a refinished antique heating grate..so it can have the vent opened when the door is closed. The coop is positioned in the back yard where the tree shades it in the morning and the house shades it in the afternoon. They so have a 100 x 100 fenced in yard to play in during the day...which is electrified poultry netting. They have a water fountain...a sand/ash pit and lots of shade. We also are now rabbit owners...they have a nice house too inside the poultry netting..and for now...everyone gets along. Got a new crew of 20 chicks coming tomorrow and hopefully I end up with more than just THREE like this time! (I share with my sis in law) we had a LOT of roosters and a few tragedies in the last hatch...

So, I need some more help/advice.
My lavender orpington has died. She had been lethargic for a few days. Now my mottled Orp. Has looked lethargic and not wanting to move all day. I started her with some probiotics and electrolytes but I fear it's too late. She will not even pick her head up and her eyes are closed. I went to two different feed stores to get Corid but both had no idea what I was talking about. ( how was that possible?!?!) I tried to explain that I suspected that the chicken had cocci. It was like I was speaking a different laungauge. So now I am down to one Orpington that looks and is acting Ok. She might be all by herself very soon.
I have 3 other mixed chicks but they are only about a week to two old and not feathered yet.
I know chickens are meant to be in a flock. Any suggestions on what to do? Do I get her a friend? Do I wait to see if she's ok? Will she be ok by herself?!?!?!?Ahhhh!!!!!:he

Is this something that happens often?

It's been an awful 3 and worrisome days!!

Sigh!

You can use honey raw honey mixed in water till you can find antibotic. Your feed & seed or TSC should have Duramycin brand name or Tetracycline hydrochloride. Mix correct amount in water hold up to her beak to get her drink. I would get a flock member or bring into ICU your ulitility room or garage. Set her up in box keep her cool and check often and get her drinking and eating. You'll also get to see if the BM is healthy. I find the more she knows your acting as flock mate by watching closly the better chance of survival. If you give honey with water and that seems to pull her through stick with it and electrolites. Keep us posted some in the morning may have better ideas.

Well my mom had a motorcycle wreck yesterday so I had to leave my animals for a few days to take care of her.

but she needs me and family is first. I left them in good hands, but I'm still stressing that something will happen before I get back. On the plus side my mom is fine just as a pretty bruised up shoulder and some nasty looking road rash down both arms and her chest. Another plus, my mom lives in Walker! Lol. I love this place and there are so many chicken lovers in the area! Already found a few people to get flock additions from. Lol! Chicken math again but people down here always seem to have beautiful birds and the exact breeds and supplies I am interested in! I go home with about 5 birds every visit along with supplies to improve my set up. Lol! I...... Just........can't.........resist.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I am glad it wasn't worse and she can make a full recovery. Hold in there!

Quote: If everything gets to you so you can't build them before the cold comes then go to either the dollar store or walmart and get cheap shower curtains to cover them. Staple or duct tape them on and the chickens will be snug. Heat is much more of a killer here then the cold is.
