"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Y'all, tonight the chicks were already snuggled up in the coop! All I had to do was close the door. It is only night 3! I was expecting at least a week to pass before that happened.

They have not been using the roosting bar though. Do I need to do anything special to teach them? I'm sorry for having so many questions! I'm just going through a lot of firsts all at once right now!

I can't wait to hatch my first eggs. I was at whole foods today and they had a new shipment of turmeric so I picked you up a rhizome to plant. Will send soon. Pam

You are such a sweetie. Please let me know how much and I'll pay for it. Thank you so much.

Yay for them going into the coop! Sometimes I will pick up a chick during the day and gently set them on the perch. I try to do it a few times and even with different chicks. Once they all see that a few times they get the idea.

Like LemonMeringue suggested, place them on the perch every now and then. From my experience young chicks won't use the perch for a few months, then all of a sudden all of them develop a taste for higher heights and start to perch.

We are officially getting three peachicks on Sunday!

The farm is growing by leaps and bounds. I'm going pick up some Marans chicks tomorrow, which will increase our birds to the following (including the anticipated peachicks): Red Pyle Old English Game Bantams, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Black Bearded Silkies, Buff Bantam Cochins, Pekins, Silver-laced Wyandottes, BBS Easter Eggers, Blue Copper Marans, Mallards, Crested Blue Swedish, Royal Palms, India Blues, and Pied India Blues. We made some progress on the pond pen today. We cut down several trees and put them in big piles to burn once they've dried out. We still haven't finished excavating the pond, and we'll need to set all the posts for the fencing then put the actually fence up.

Also, sometimes mine roost and sometimes they sit on the floor. They will naturally roost as they age. I remember how exciting it was when I found out they put themselves to bed. And I really love holding them when they're sleepy. So sweet.

I love that too. Especially the younger ones that are still flighty. It gives me a chance to get close to them. Some of the older hens though just do not put up with "nonsense cuddling" Lol! Of course if always seems to be the ones that lay the prettiest eggs. They know they can get away with DIVA behavior.

I bought 100 meal worms today. The girls and I had a blast.
I bet they went bonkers!!!

I feel like I have been knocked of my perch! So beat.

The girls and I treated one of my little bantam hens for a mild case of bumble foot. After bandaging we cut the toe off of an old sock and cut her a couple of toe holes then used duct tape carefully wrapped around the cuff part of it and the top of her little sock folded down over that. We made sure not to wrap any of it too tight. It was the cutest thing watching her after we put her down. She lifted and cocked her leg out to the side and gave it a quick inspection and went on her way traipsing about the yard without a care in the world. Running and everything. She is one of the sweetest and tamest bantam hens we have.

Great way to use up old socks

When I change her bandage I am just going to throw it all away and replace everything with new. I also gave her a dose of vitamins.
