"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Are you going to hatch your eggs or sell eggs? Pam
I am going to eat, sale and then hatch, Planning to hatch the EEs from the start i think but that will be spring, hoping for a Easter hatch. I dont have a bator yet but i one picked out and I have a birthday in August and then there is Chrismas. I have kept every reciept from every purchase that deals with chickens, from the purchase of chicks, feed & supplys, medications, building and fence meterials. I can take a deduction on my tax return if i raise them to breed and sell.

A determined coyote will try many things and test for holes in your barriers when such an easy meal is on the other side. Silly chickens are just yummy.
They can clear a 6ft fence. But tend to use things (bow stand, crates and have been caught climbing chain link) they'll dig a tunnel faster than a rabbit if paws are in good shape and can squeeze thru any hole as wide as its skull. Skilled wild dogs they are...they kill a whole flock as a reward for getting in too :( we've shot 2 here and before they came for the chickens they took about a dozen stray cats.

Animal control came out and set traps for free. Can't shoot them then but can relocate or AC may put them down.

I think your fence is awesome. Great step in predator protection even if not without a fox or coyote testing it :) We have a dog that roams the property line and a good sight on the rifle :gig I'd love a nice electric barrier.

You are so right, Angel. And they are pretty cagey. We are pretty sure one got my granddaughter's cat. One was seen a couple of streets down with another cat in it's mouth. They will expend a lot of effort to get to chickens.

My legbar roo tried to mount a hen this morning. She wasn't having it they aren't laying yet. Looks like I might get to use my bator sooner than I thought. I also had a roost egg this morning luckily their was a feed bag under it, it stayed in one piece. Pam

Hi everyone so glad others are getting eggs!

LindaB I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! I'll try for a few pictures.
The first pretty blue egg was after I "knew" the little brats were laying, lol! The bowl is the stash we found in our bushes after seeing the first egg we braved the sharp edges and the egg hunt was on, and it's not even Easter :) We have an olive egger "Easter" and her sister "Linebacker" is the blue egg layer. Easter whom I thought was lost to a coon the other day returned about an hour later and this was what see was doing I suppose ;) So proud of my girls! We did the float test and all were sinkers none were stinkers! WOOT! And were the best eggs ever in a burrito with a bit of bacon, avacado, and yummy! Just an FYI of what I did - I saw the squatting, thought I heard the "egg song" watched for days the combs were red, vents pink, and then I noticed the vent was a bit streched out looking...Hmmm... So I held opening the door for free range time till after noon and saw the blue egg. Easter ran for the bushes like "gotta go gotta go right now" lol and she gave us a beautiful green egg! Very funny I didn't realize they could hold it. We did this again and found our last little "Buff" laid us a pretty brown egg.
That's a wonderful feeling all nice and neat in a
row. Notice the place they decided to utilize instead of nest boxes those suckers are sharp! I'll be glad when I can get our golden wyandotte "Goldie" and our two Delaware's eggs to add to our cartons. We also have some chicks on the way with our Backyard Special comming the 1st week of August, the 2nd week, and meaties with a few Wellsummers since we lost some of our egg layers to that coon (who we haven't heard from since placing a radio outside, and reinforcing the kennel- fingers crossed we are smarter than the critters, lol) I'd go for submitting #2 the chick at the waterer is great! Sorry about your roo though :( Angel if you want a roo hit me up I'll be getting Wellsummer, black australorp, Blue andalusians, and some Blue laced red wyandottes, with some silver laced wyandotte's straight run through Murray McMurray. When I ordered my Buff's straight run I got 2 females out of seven chicks so.... I know I'll have some wanna trade we can do that :)

They sure can hold them in! I had a bantam hen walking around funny, more like a waddle. I thought she was sick and I was full of dread. It turns out the rooster had kicked all the hay out of the nest and she refused to lay until it was refilled. Upon fresh hay she ran to the box and dropped the egg in less than a second!

Haha. Mine all held theirs in for the first day their old coops were closed and the nesting boxes were in the new coop. I did get one from Prim so far today in the new coop. I have a laying house, too that for some reason none of them will use any more. Lol. Just can't always figure them out.

When that has happened to me in the past it was because of predators. They keep the memory of something traumatic happened their.

Hey everybody, you know how cheesy I am so I'll tell you my evening is now taken over by the Syfy Channel. Original Sharknado is on NOW and Part 2 after it. I missed it last year.
I only made it to 10 on my babies last night. The other one is gone. Sigh. I need to rethink how to house the babies. I have a 3' x 12' grow out pen that's wedged in tight between the two others. I think I'm gonna just put shavings in there and use it until I get rid of the big chickens and these grow a bit.
