"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'm not familiar with "Petrus" if someone has time can they fill me in? Is it a store or a type feed, or did the whole subject go right over my head? I am a natural blonde, but typically don't act like one!

I typically buy 8-10 50 lb bags of feed a month.. Sometimes a little more depending on the weather.

From my understanding it's the best small-business feed store in the world. ;) everyone loves their feeds and their birds, so yes and yes? I've yet to go, but our chicken friends in Alexandria got their birds there. I'm not sure what they feed, though. Their website is really minimal and basically tells you the numbers to call for all info, which is sweet. :)

Jennie, I am very familiar with Petrus, they are a local to Alex. area for several generations, they are next to the Red River on Hi Way 1 north, Old Boyce RD, they have their grains shipped direct in bulk and place it in grain hoppers, everyday, they grind/mill the grains to a specific recipe if you will, they mix each type of feed according to what the needs are for each type animal, they cut out the middle man and sell direct to the customer which makes their products cheaper as the customer picks the feed up there, they carry hay also, the chicks i have bought from them have been exactly what was advertised, no complaints, if you scroll back a couple pages, you will find a receipt from 10/3/14 for 11 sacks of various feeds and the prices for each, i hope this answers your questions,LC

Thank you, I found it...Its right off 165 just south of 49...I have to go to Shreveport next Friday so I can stop in and check it out on my way back or on my way there...I must have passed it a thousand times and never knew it was there! Thank you,

Good evening all. :)

Well this is what I've gotten done the past few weeks. I've been working my tail off as you can see.
The building grew on me as I built it. There is 32'x20' under the roof. I just finished the metal skirt today.
It is buried 14" deep around the coop except where the posts are.
The gable vents and rear vents in the eaves are all covered with 1/2" hardware cloth. There is also cloth
between the roof tin and 2x4 lathe. The second hand windows came off a job years ago. They were perfect for this project.
I still need to make hardware cloth screens for the lower half of them but I believe it can wait till next year.

From this view there is 8' between the posts.

Rear shot.

Ok. I ordered 30 Barred Rock chicks from Ideal and hopefully have 12 Buckeye chicks coming this next week also(fingers crossed).
Since I won't have time to build a run and get the rest of the house completely pred proof(my body can't handle it right now) My plan is to build a temporary brooder.
I'm going to pred proof this 8'x20' section V and use the back half were the ladder is as a brooder, and give them more room as needed. Will use a circular shield to keep them corralled to prevent the chicks from wandering into the corners. I can use plastic to cut the drafts. Basically plastic off 1/2-3/4 of the rear of this section and with a low plastic ceiling. Will put sand or pine shavings down. I have a Brinsea 50 bird chick warmer coming. Can also add extra brooder lamps if it gets to cool to soon.
Does this sound like a good plan? Would like to get everyone's input and opinion on this.
I would hate to have to cancel my order :) Thank you.
Cody

Man, I know people that would love to have this to live in, you have done an amazing job and you will do fine by your chicks, you will spend enough time in there with them in the cold to see how they are doing, this i know from the character you show in your work, your birds will be blessed to have you as their caretaker, just remember one thing, there is always help here and at google, ask google any question you want and you will know what i mean, chickens are the # 1 most kept animal on earth so there is a multitude of info out there. Super great job.

Well, consensus in the breeds thread is that my mystery girls are olive eggers or EEs. At the auction there were about five cages of lavender birds, a splash bird, these two, then more lavenders. The only lavender birds I know of are orpingtons? So I'll just keep hoping I guess. ;)

Not that it matters. I just like to call them by the right names when I tell people what I have. I wanted beautiful girls and that they definitely are.

Thank you ALL for the compliments on the coop. :)

Yea Pam the chick math did a number on me! Math was my weakest subject. LOL :)
I figured I should build it bigger than needed. I'll get many years of enjoyment out of my effort, after all I'm still young. ;)

So sounds like I'm on the right track for the brooder setup. I'll post more pics when the chics are in their new home.

Special thanks to Topdog for advice on building the house. :)

I've enjoyed being a member of the group. I don't post often as I'm a man of few words but I read yall's posts daily.

Thanks to everyone. :)

I might be completely wrong, but my first impression on theses two are Splash Orpingtons, color, shape build, legs, heads, feathering ....They don't resemble easter eggers to me. They look young, 16-20 weeks maybe? I have a yard full of Orpingtons, Splash, Blue, Black, Buff and Lavender as well as EE....There is definitely a big difference in my opinion. But my ideal EE (AKA Americana) look like eagles or a cross between Ameraucana's and Araucana's with beareds, or tuff's or muff's ect.

Again this is an opinion, I love the EE personally, but I do not see that in these two!
