Those are pretty. The Wyandottes that we got this year were pretty, but not nearly as heavy of birds as they should be. We traded most of them to people that wanted layers. We still have one that lays a TINY bantam size egg. Sigh. She is going to the freezer. I hope you are able to find ones that are better quality than those hatchery ones we had.

Our incubator went into lockdown. Only 1egg looks like it quit. 7 out of the dozen shipped eggs are still jumping. I think that's pretty good considering there were some air cells that looked pretty bad....... Even with the good packing job.

I've had some really strange air cells hatch. It's amazing.
I was considering Dick Horstman's SLW - they look pretty good. All of his birds do.

Think I"m going to do the same thing. RIR hatch due Thursday of this week -- now strongly considering some Silver Laced Wyandottes - I just love that color pattern!

I have silver and gold. The silver have better temperaments. Both the gold are mean to the rest of the flock. I like the silver color better too. Pam

I've had some really strange air cells hatch. It's amazing.
I was considering Dick Horstman's SLW - they look pretty good. All of his birds do.

No can do -- that's when my full-to-the-tip-top bator is supposed to be hatching! I go into lockdown tomorrow. And I don't even know if his birds are laying right now - haven't emailed him to find out yet. Still debating -- I like his pencilled rocks, too....

Speaking of eggs I got a new egg today.

The first egg of the coop that has the younger flock now two more Legbars and two olive eggers to start laying. Then that coop will all be laying. It's the smaller egg. The other is from a Easter egger to show size and colors. The rest of the day was disinfecting waterers an shoveling poop to clean the coop.

Everybody's getting all these nice eggs Can't wait till my little birds are old enough to lay.

My new EZPlucker arrived today from "CC Only" along with three killing cones. Was very glad nothing was damaged during shipping or would have had to have gone back. The plucker looks nice and is made of quality materials even though it is made in China. The 1 hp motor has a cast iron housing. The pulleys are also heavy cast iron. Looks like I will get to try it out soon(hopefully). My sister has a few cocks that need culling. The cones are pretty nice, they are stainless steel with spot welds to hold the cone shape together. The top and bottom edges are bent over so no sharp edges. The quality on these are better than I expected. I'm glad I caught the Thanksgiving sale or the plucker and cones combined would have been around 250.00 dollars more. If anyone is in the market for cones I would suggest these if you were to buy rather than make them. Although I think they are a bit steep at full price.

I've gone and jumped off the deep end. Today I ordered a Dickeys 2x2 incubator. I'm gonna need something to hatch soon.

Uh Oh! That incubator is going to get you real deep into chicken math real fast. Good thing about it though...... It all tastes like chicken. I culled 5 today and I sure could have used a plucker. But I did have a little helper. So it wasn't too bad. Now there is a bucket of fresh chicken soaking and cooling on the patio. :yiipchick

I think I read somewhere that someone was considering adding supplemental lights to their coop next winter.

A little note about that from us.

We had some lights around here.....from years ago.....that have been used for numerous things. Those long white shop type lights that take the 2 long florescent light bulbs and you can hang them. We went ahead and put them into the barn and plugged them in, Light it UP! Not so fast JACK! Between the lights and the heater for when we had that first cold snap that was such a quick and big drop in temperature we totally had overloaded the power cords that were run from the house. It was as simple as a little math addition. Too many watts for the cords. One morning I went out and the cords were melted together at the plug

And it had actually tripped that breaker in the house. So all that cord was unplugged and thrown away. Hubby went and bought this huge cord
Utilitech 100foot Outdoor Yellow power cord.

Sometimes we don't do what we should do, until we HAVE to. Its a human flaw we have.

There is no need right now for heat since all the babies are bigger and fully feathered. So no heaters. But we still wanted to reduce the electrical cost of whatever lights we were running. Part of the problem was overload from the lights pulling too many watts. They were doing this annoying flickering thing sometimes anyway, since they were old. So we ditched them and decided to see if we could find something LED that would be more economical.

And we found these...... Utilitech Power Pro LED lights

Super bright!!! Only pulls 15watts. We got 2 and it is more than enough light for the 12x12 barn.

Its the kind of light that you have to wire in. Its pretty cool that LED lights last so long too.


I am SO glad that it tripped the breaker and didn't do any damage.

I got 32 yesterday and 27 today, some are in molt and only lay about 5 a week, RSLs haven't missed a beat, 10 for 10 everyday, plus EEs and Ameracaunas begining to lay, I have sold 18 dz since Tuesdayand have 7 dz in fridge ready to go.Plus all we can eat and use.
