Number two is zipping right now.  I didn't do anything but take the turner out and put the eggs in a paper egg carton with dime size holes cut out of the bottom.  I put paper towels down on top of the screen and they are fine.  I've never done anything else.  I followed instructions from other threads and it works for me.  Don't worry about anything pertaining to the temps or heights.  The egg carton is enough.

Ok, so the egg carton goes on top of the screen, or the screen goes on top of the egg carton? I'm tempted to try it with the carton on the bottom. Do your eggs hatch inside the carton, or you lay them on their sides?

I shut the coop door and put a tarp over my coop for the night. I will open the coop up at 9 am tomorrow when the sun is out and the temps should start rising. The windchill advisory is from 12am to 9am.

Lemon, thank you for the offer. Could I take 3 for $10. That would be the same price and you get to keep more. Win win, lol.

Update to by hen i found dead.

After my post I went back outside to clean my coop. I noticed that the chicken that I had thought died, had not. My neighbor sent me a txt about the dead hen and told me it had a yellow ban around its leg. Turns out, it did not. I never double checked. So the hen that died was one of my older hens that was about eight. I still have my three younger Barred Rocks. The one that died was at the top of the pecking order. We will see who the new queen will be?

Eight years old!!! Sean, she had a great life. Queen Bee and all.

I don't have the same bator y'all have but I was reading on the bursa site that for lock down to take all the supports out and naturally the eggs lay to the side. I wasn't doing that in my other hatches their instructions with the bator were vague. So I read the links Lemon posted and Bursa's site, Pam

Assumably not over 55%. I had it down to 40% and put in a towel to pour water in. and by the time the babies started coming it was up to 80%. That's why I took out the towel. It's 55% again. Second still sitting.

We had an insulated pump house built this summer. The water has frozen several times last year and Aimee had to cancel her grooming customers. And it's funny the water in the house is cold but running the hydrant at the well the water comes out tepid, almost warm. So I hope that it was a boatload of money well spent.

If your worried let the water run in a thin stream. Thast's what we did when I was a kid to keep pipes and pump from frezzing. Guess I need to add a little more water it was 39 to 40 after adding a little water. Thanks Pam

Day 9. I candled Monday night and had one clear with a fractured shell I didn't notice before. I left it in, just in case. The other 11 were doing stuff! It's hard for me to say how good or bad or weak or strong anything appeared. Some had well-defined black spots and some were a little fuzzy. If it had veins I kept it. And I made an interesting observation!



This is my set up. I noticed that the eggs on the inside (against the wall, under the cabinet) had more consistent weight loss and development than the other side. I'm guessing it's because of the more stable external temps? A chicken friend mentioned lighting, which I had not previously considered.

Anyone want to chime in?

That's a good question, that I hadn't considered. Turning it off would make sense for mine because of the exposed heating element? Would the bator work too hard trying to keep it at temp? I guess you still have a week to decide.
