"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I don't know if privett is where TSC gets their chicks. But last time I heard that is where Petrus gets their chicks. I've never heard of anyone having any trouble buying chicks there. Ours always have done well.

Privett is in NM. I read a detailed, angry blog that stated the problem was with TSC, not Privett, and explaining about vaccines. That's all I've had time to look at. BUT if Petrus uses Privett and there haven't been any problems, then maybe there's some truth to it. I'm not sure.

I guess the best, safest option is to get the chicks I want from wherever I find them and then vaccinate, or brace for losses. I can't remember the rules for vaccinating adult birds or if chicks would become carriers and infect my adults. I need to read and make notes again.

I'm wondering which breeds are more heat hardy and have done best for any of you here in Louisiana. I'd like to have two or three different breeds, and lean towards darker eggs and gentler birds, since I enjoy holding and petting my animals most. Opinions?

Thanks! I just requested to join that group. :)

EDIT to add: That link is AWESOME. I found a breeder near Austin I'm going to contact about either chicks or eggs. I'm traveling to San Antonio at the end of February, so I could pick them up. There's no website, so I need to get picks of stock and whatnot. SO EXCITING.

Camping there's also a breeder in Hattiesburg MS who posted on the SS fb page. She has a few pics online and is selling chicks this spring. Good luck!

Thanks Chica! I noticed that yesterday, but I just went back and looked again. I don't really like her birds that much. Their speckles are too large and disorderly for my tastes, and my understanding of the SOP.

Compare her hens to mine:

I have had the following breeds over the years:
Ameracaunas, Easter Eggers, Black Australorps, Welsummers, Cuckoo Marans, Exhequeur Leghorns, Blue Andalusians, Blue Rocks, Blue Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, & I forget what all else.

Of these, the Blue Andalusians are the most heat hardy - they will lay in the worst summer heat but they lay white eggs & altho mine were hatched by me & handled from birth & friendly, as a whole, they are not a "cuddly" breed. The Orpingtons did worst in the heat -- they had a lot of English blood in them & were VERY fluffy, which may have been a factor. My cousin across the road keeps a flock of Buff Orpingtons & swears by them - they lay well & are friendly.

My Welsummers & Cuckoo Marans both have done fine & I'll always some of them in my flock. Mine lay a nice, dark egg, some of the Welsummers a speckedly egg - both breeds are from breeders not hatchery stock. I keep the EEs because who doesn't like a green or blue egg? So - Welsummers, Marans and EEs are the mainstay of my laying flock. All of mine are friendly & follow me around -- again, I hatched all of these birds so "I'm the Mama"!

The Rhode Island Reds & Blue Australorps are just the 2 breeds I'm currently "playing" with. Whether I keep them permanently or not depends on how well they lay & how much I like them.

Kackling, I had no idea a pullet would be a surrogate at such a young age. :)

Everyone, I put my eggs into lockdown today. Totally uneventful! Nothing happened

Those are gorgeous! :thumbsup

Thanks!! These two and the rooster are the beginnings of my "breed stock." I got them off bookoo so they could be show quality for all I know!! :lau Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure he said he got the chicks from a lady who got the eggs from Georgia. Whatever the case, I think they're really close to the SOP.
