Manda, I really like your brooder bed :thumbsup

Sorry to hear about your weak chicks and having to assist. I'm new to all this but I think shipping is really hard on egg/embryo development. There's so many variables regarding how they're handled, temps they go through, the age of the egg, fertility, age and diet of the parent stock and others I'm sure I'm not naming. I find it amazing that it can be done in the first place. Since shipped eggs can't be guaranteed it lets the seller off the hook pretty easily doesn't it. "Out of Sight Guarantee" ;)  I'm looking forward to being able to hatch my own unshipped eggs.
.

Im not bragging but the eggs i ship have made people very happy. But not everyone takes care of their birds like i do.. i love hatching my own.. i have a problem, lol.... i hatch them then give them away to people instead of charging... i charge but only very little if i do... i love hatching them...and i have a nitch for it. i have 2 full incubators now. saying it out loud makes me know i have a hatching problem. WOW
i just love the little guys.

I've been noticing we have lurkers that are coming and reading, but not posting. Just wondering if all of you are hatching eggs, getting any new chickens, any new poultry projects etc. Would love to hear about what is happening around the state with other poultry people. :D

Guess I'll be finding this out I went in half on some marens eggs. Hope I get the half thats healthy. lol. Really joking hoping we each get a trio that would be good. Then I ordered the same Barred rock line Cody ordered but I'm sure less eggs. I've heard some people get 80% hatch rate from shipped eggs. So I'll cross my fingers. It's the age of the parent stock plus their condition, the packaging, The handling, etc. A lot of things you or the seller have no controll of. Thats what insurence is for when its the shipping and handling part of it. I know a couple of people that were giving replacement eggs when none hatched or they were't fertile etc.Pam

Ya'll, we had a big storm with high winds and rain earlier today. Knocked out the power for about 5 hrs so had to pull the chicks out of the brooder, bring them in the house and keep them by the wood burning stove in a cardboard box. Power came back on. When I put them back in the brooder they were some happy little chicks. They were bouncing around like popcorn popping.

You absolutely have no control -- I've had zero % and I've had 100% on shipped eggs. I already posted about my Blue Astralorps (which still remain to be found) that was a FIRST for me to have shipped eggs lost in the mail -- but, things happen. the shipper offered me my choice of replacement eggs or a refund - I chose the refund since I already have eggs in my bator. The ones I have in the bator now I saw one clear & development in the rest, so looking good. (they were also shipped). It's a gamble any way you look at it!

Whew! That's a lot of catch up reading on my part! Glad to see all the hatchings! From my previous hatch it turns out I have pair of Black Jersey Giants!

I hatched out some Rhodebars, 4 hatched, but 3 had problems, got 2 left. And I hatched it 5 white bresse! All healthy and doing well! And I added isbars, Legbars, and Barnevelders.
I have black, black copper and Birchen Marans eggs coming in the mail along the Marraduna Basque and more white bresse. Plus we have been modifying our new coop and set the silver appleyards in a breeding pen.

All that plus life as homeschoolers and a Six month old baby girl who likes to keep her mama up! Life has been busy!

Not sure you can see the appleyards here. Unfortunately, my boys forgot to latch the coop when closing it up for the night and I lost the baby duck and 5 silkies! I was not a happy mama the next morning!
