"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well I let Day 18 slip up on me and didn't have an empty carton to cut for the hatch. So I'm going to try on their sides. I put a towel down, and they are fat-side of air cell up. I thought my towel was appropriate; it's honestly just the first one I grabbed. :D

Hi all, thought I'd share my hatch! Got 10 Marans! Too many died at pip, i think my temp was off, a bit low. I had to help 4 hatch, only 1 of those died, but it tore is umbilical cord, before i even started to help it.

@LemonMeringue I love my large fowl! I have silkies but they are my only bantam breeds and i have a couple medium breeds as well. But i love huge chickens! I have langshans, they will probably be my biggest breed, i thought i had jersey giants that i bought from eBay, but they are birchen. ..and jerseys don't come in that color. ..not sure what i got there! They came from tan eggs. Anyway all that to say i love huge chickens, i think if you move and get some you'll love them to!

Hiccups already. I can't get the bator above 96. After this hatch, I'm getting ew thermometers. And maybe a fan kit.

Your towel may be absorbing too much heat, you could try paper towels folded down to 1/4 normal size and row your eggs side by side on those, this will allow air movement through the screen and back up, any moisture collected on the towel will have a cooling affect on the surrounding air.

Thanks TD! I finally got the temp up so I do t want to mess with it now, but I'll definitely remember for Saturday. The towel doesn't cover the entire screen, only about 2/3. I thought it would help keep the humidity up, which I had trouble with last time.

Time for my Princess Bailey to go back to her grown up friends!!! She had been so long suffering! And I can't believe she was just letting them sit on her back like that. And they always squeeze into that corner even though they have a large space. Goofy!

Thats where the heat is. Crouding together is also for warmth.Unless its 2 hens in a nest box. Pam

Hey guys! Here's a few photos of my Marans and wyandottes. We butchered a few Marans cockerels and a small wyandotte hen that had her leg crushed by a horse. A few pictures show the carcasses, so please don't look if you are squeamish. We were debating butchering the hen since we liked her so much, but I'm glad we did. You can see in the photos below the green tinge to her leg, which hung limp at her side. We removed the leg and kept the rest of the meat. She'll be slow cooked in a stew since she was a few years old.

The cockerels were about 30 weeks old and lean, as expected, but we had way too many and the rest of the flock is much calmer without them. I finally got my water temperature stable on the last bird. I found that 160 for five seconds was perfect. Feathers rolled right off, even though I had a few left to pluck before i was done.

I also included a photo of the unlaid eggs we found in the wyandotte hen. I've heard of them, but it was definitely cool to see it in person. She had laid that morning before butchering, so the next egg was still shell-less.

So ya'll I lost one of me 6 week old Bielefelder cockerels last night. I noticed yesterday that it was making a sound as it was breathing. Like it's airway was blocked or something. It had only been about 24 hrs of moving them out of the brooder. I suspect something was going on before they were moved because it happened so fast. The bird looked and acted healthy. I'll be keeping an eye on the others. Thought I should mention it in case someone had a suggestion.

Pam good to see you online. Thinking of you, your family and your Father.
