"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just an update, our last hatch started with 84 eggs, 2 incubators, we ended up with a total of 22 of the 84., Oh well, we were chcicken poor to start with, i had to treat my main layer flock with tylan 100 for sneezing, runny eyes, only the lead roo was bad, so i have been boiling about 20+ eggs a day and feeding them back to the flock, we will be doing this for 10 days.

You might want to see if the Ag vet will come test them. Just to be extra carefull it's not AI.Did you ever hatch any legbars? Hope hazel and Lawrence are doing good. Pam

Haven't caught anything yet. Which is unusual that we haven't caught anything. I'm thinking maybe a bobcat? IDK. I'm puting everyone on lock down before dusk. I'm shocked we haven't caught a racoon or opossum nothing. It was triggered one night but empty. Saw you add on FB you need to raise your price on your SS. It cost more to hatch and raise them than what your charging. I've seen roosters go for more. Pam

Thanks, Pam. I guess the market just isn't that good around here. I still haven't sold that juvie rooster, and he's coming up on three months. The guy you told me about was interested, but not willing to make the drive. Even at their price, only a two people have been interested. I'm thinking about processing some of the extra cockerels, just to see how they dress. I plan on getting some stock from show lines in the fall, and I'll probably raise prices then.

I'll get the name of the couple my neighber knows that were looking for them. He said he had tried to find them for a while. I also say a post from two long time breeders that if you haven't sold it by june you won't sell it till spring that it's a slow time for chicken sales. I hope their wrong. Pam

It has seemed to slow down considerably. I'm thinking about hatching over the winter so I'll have point-of-lay pullets by spring, when they're in demand. I did read earlier on the sussex thread that fall is a good time to get started birds because the breeders are making their culls. That's when I got my first batch of sussex last year, so it makes sense.

I was already planning to raise this bunch and sell pullets after camp season is finished, so if none sell I'm not in a big fix. And there's a big auction five minutes up the road if I ever get really desperate to thin them out.

I'll plan better next year. :D

When I get my new coop set up I will be in the market for some more pullets, my goal is to have it set up before July 1st. If you still have some then I'll be interested. It's my mixed breed pen so breed is not important. I'm north of Baton Rouge, where are you?

I'm in LeBlanc, but my folks are moving over near Amite at the end of this month, so by the time I have pullets I'll be able to meet closer in that part of the state. :)

Well it passed about ten miles south of me. Llots of rain though.

Miserable day today. I put my two wk olds out in the coop. Left the door open and a 5'snake got on and killed two of my white rocks. He ate one but the other was a pullet. I spent the rest of the day trying to get the 4 hens back in. They got wet but finally went in.
