Hey buddy. Thanks. I've been playing with the new pressure canner I bought. I wanted to have my handyman build me raised beds but I think I'll have to improvise with grow bags this year. Whatever it takes to get me a boat load of 'maters and peppers. LoL

You can buy a raised bed kit at sam's or wallmart . Easy to put together and a lot cheaper than your handy man. Plus the composit last longer than wood. Good to see you post glad you are continuing to post. Pam

I thought I would share pictures of our first crossed chicks for meat. Malay x Marans or EE hens. The chicks are fast growers with the males having a nice amount of leg thigh meat. The breast is just OK. We are going to work on that later. Here are some pictures of males, which is mostly what we have had.

This guy is going to freezer camp tonight or in the am.

I'm only going to keep hens from these breedings. The boys above are EE x Malay and the pullet is Marans x Malay. I have 8 more chicks that I think we have about 3 or 4 pullets in. They are really little still. The funny thing is. The cock bird is SUCH A TURD. I mean really!!! He charges the fence and bites me anytime my hands is close to the wire. He seriously is a beast. But every single one of these chicks have been serious snuggle bugs. They bond to us and love hugs. It must be a game bird thing. We have never experienced this before. When we put a group of juvies into the greenhouse they would guys and guys when they saw us. Then we would go see them and squat down. They jumped on your lap and snuggle their face up in your neck and hair and then just sir there. We were dumfounded the first time. After a good snuggle then they were off to play. That lasted a few days until they gained confidence. Then we got hugs only when WE picked them up. So funny.

I think that's a marens thing which were originally breed for fighting. I have one now that's a biter.

The Malay chick bird (daddy) is the mean biter. He is the only chicken I own like that. Usually they get sent to the pot for acting like that.

I too, have some of the Good Shepherd line of Barred Rocks...love these beautifully barred huge birds. I felt blessed to get my 3 girls and roo last fall when we passed thru Kansas! Getting peeps now. Mr. Frank Reese is a nice guy to deal with and his birds are lovely!

I hatched some from the XW line and looking down the road for a good show line to outcross with these. Will you sell eggs or chicks say in 7 to 8 months? Pam

It's always the best looking or the one you like best. Bummer. The ones I got direct from greenfire are the 2013 import. Only 3 eggs hatched or only three cockerels? Also was told the few orders I have that had extra packing peanuts that turned out to be Biefelders are also 2013. I have three month old pair that were peanuts. They said when they import they bring in at least two different lines for diversity. She did tell be sometimes when the breed is ultra rare they can only get one line. Pam

Ok good. I may want more eggs from you in the future. Out of the two 2013 males I have left one looks to have potential. It also has a nice clean comb. I'm holding my breath nothing happens to the rest of them before I get a hatch. Thank you Pam.

I have 24 eggs in the incy now that are jumping and thumping.

I will need to see how these grow out before making any promises to anyone since I only have 3 hens from Good Shepherd. I am hoping for bright yellow legs, tiny barring and hefty size birds as most that are called Barred Rocks here around Lake Charles must have Cuckoo Maran mixed in the gene pool.

My GS roo, Stretch, went to chicken heaven after another old roo scratched his eye lid and we doctored on him for 6 weeks without healing it. Really heart breaking!

So....depending on what comes out of the incubator I can let you know. If I have Black Star chicks I will know if the other rooster got with my pure hens. The other bossy rooster is a big lovely NHRed from great S Dakota stock which will result in Black Star chicks and folks usually don't want a rooster from that cross unless they have mixed chickens already. Those boys should do well in "freezer camp" though. And the black hens will lay like crazy so I can sell them locally.

We plan to go by Kansas later this summer and try to get another heritage big boy for my girls. Right now we are into church camp with the grandkids starting next week. So, I am really tied up with that. I guess I need to check BYC more often. Why don't you PM me later on to remind me what you are looking for...I would be glad to work something out with you.

Hey Lemon. Why is it you pick these breeds for meat birds crosses? Is it because of the size? Just trying to learn
