Chuck, he is the MAN!!! The broody moms are tired of the babies and have gone back to laying eggs and being annoyed with the babies being clingy. So they went back into the laying pen and Chuck has taken over teaching and watching over them. He doesn't snuggle or warm them, but they don't need that any way. I walked in this evening and had some grass on the front if my boots. He promptly called them over to clean it up. One even jumped to grab a piece he was holding in his mouth for them. Cutest thing ever. I love this picture as he watches over them taking their dust bath. Kind of bummed though that I'm going to have to cull some of the males already. So far this year we have been very cockerel heavy in these Cochin.

I'm praying that both my broodies stick it out. I don't have the room in the brooder for the NUMBER of eggs they're sitting on. DH only realized a day or so ago that I let them both have eggs. (They've been setting almost two weeks.) :lau

Pam why don't you try those baskets like I did? They worked great for me. Lots of holes in them so plenty of air flow. Then I used zip ties to hold a piece of that rubbery shelf liner on the top. And that has lots of holes too. I just had to be sure I didn't put to many eggs in each basket. We were surprised the chicks actually seemed calmer. I guess because they felt snuggled a bit when they stood up tall or climbed over another egg their head touched that shelf covering. I didn't even know some had hatched until we got the flashlight and looked. They were just sitting there chilling out.
