At least that is what Oreo thinks. Lol. There were out on grass and he was sitting by the side and sticking his head outside to eat. Haha.


I must say, holy moly. This heat index is getting up there!

Good morning! I have a question. One of my white leghorn had blood on her head yesterday and after checking it out I found that her comb was cut in half on the back part of the comb. Now the flock had gotten startled when my husband made a loud noise by their coop and had piled up together in a corner furthest from the noise. I was assuming that the injury happened accidently at that time. I cleaned up the pullet, applied blu-kote to the area on the comb and after a short while when I was sure the bleeding g had stopped I placed her back with the flock. I walked back to the house to get my chair to watch them just in case I needed to remove her again. When I got back, there was blood splatter on the walk into the coop. I located her and sure enough I observed two of the other pullets pulling at her comb causing it to bleed again. I removed her, cleaned her and have her isolated in a cage in my garage. Whew! Long winded, sry The question is, can a chicken be reintroduced after being targeted by the other chickens? Or should I possibly be focusing on trying to rehome her?

Do you have a Rooster? If you do the cut was probably started by ruff mating. If not it's all hens. While she is separated make sure they can see her. If you are able take her out into the chicken yard hold her walk around with her proposely moving around above your hens. If you notice the higher ranking hens roost on the highest roost. Doing this ellivates her rank in the flock. With her injury her rank has been demoted to low on the totem pole. After she has healed some when you take her in the run set her down stay in the yard. If the hens try to hurt her push them away. You always want to be head hen and dominate your roosters. One they leave her alone I would put her back at roosting time on the roost. They don't peck etc. at night. Good luck. Pam

I do have a cockerel. He is about 18 wks and I have noticed him grabbing this pullet on the neck feathers but not mounting her. Btw, this pullet has recently had her comb turn red and start growing larger along with the wattle. She is 18 wks also. I assumed she was maturing and her hormones were triggering the cockerel. I have two roosts in the coop and they all fit on the highest so they sleep on the same roost at night. The two leghorn chickens used to sleep by the big cockerel but lately they both have started sleeping at the opposite end away from the cockerel. So you may have something there Pam. Thank you!

Almost all mt breeds except two are panting and miserable. When I feed water etc. I am soaked from head to toe. I'm miserable too!!

My chicks are in the garage. A/C set at 85. I'm still trying to get the hang of this temperature setting. It's hard when I'm at work all day....

Isbars and Swiss black hens which you would think Black birds would be panting but these aren't. They are on the small size of large foul that could make a difference. The Legbars aren't bad either. They only pant if the roost in the rafters in the big coop. They like it high where the heat is. Pam

Pam, very interesting on the black chickens, i wanted some after i saw em for the first time, and i like knowing that theyre cool so longs they have shade... My turkeys are kool w the heat so far, and my gold sex links dont seem to mind it in the least but my silkies just lay pant horribly like your Cody i feel so bad for em. Im already planning to move them to the coolest area during the hottest time and that why theyre not there yet

Annnnnnd i candled my first clutch last night!!!!
