I’ll ask! For Lake Charles/Sulphur you can have a hive in the city, but it has to be 25 feet from your property line. I’ve learned if you don’t check for three weeks the hive could grow a new queen and you’d never realize it. So more often than that. Maybe once a week? I’ll double check.

I dont think i could leave it alone for 3 months :lau but thats how long it takes for a new queen? Would that be a bad thing or just mentioned cuz the queen should be watched for something?

Ive seen queens rejected from a wild hive- Brutal!

Not months- weeks! Their society is crazy: the workers decide if they don’t like the Queen, and they grow a new one. It’s wild.

Look for a beekeepers association on fb- I joined two groups, and one posted about the class through the ag extension. It was only $20 but it’s so in-depth! I don’t think I could start without the class.

I was really only interested in those couple of facts, thank you for your answers! I really cant fool with it Yet ;) we flooded aug of 16 and are Still working on rebuilding. When im ready to commit to it i will indeed look for some fb pages thats a great suggestion thanks again!

20$ really isn't bad but my next class will def be to get the trapping license. Ive placed an order for two XL 2 door traps. We have real bad preds here too they nearly wiped me out, about like you, but thats when i sold the rest to lakones. I was big and preg, DH had broken his neck we jus couldnt do enough for them at that time. Im reading that part of it is how few people there are these days in the fur trade. Only 3k licenses issued last yr statewide. Ive learned a lil about skinning fur bearers, stretching the pelt to dry, baiting traps. Class is online so itll be easy to get it done.

Did you know Pam also sold off all her birds? Last we spoke i think she had three egg hens period. I had gotten her Bresse when she first started downsizing.

Lakones still has birds but has gone back to work full time so she doesnt have any time to be social here.

I lost codieshell's numb and have looked for her to no avail.

I see topdog was last active about a yr ago.

Sure missed u guys sorry everyones left!

Topdog is active on fb. I have one of his brooders. I traded him laying hens for the brooder several years back. :lol:
 
Look at the Cajuns coming outta da swamp!!!

There was a question for me up a ways, I got my chicks from TSC. Started out with 2 Red Rocks but lost one the first night. Also had two Rouen ducks but lost both of them for reasons that are beyond my limited knowledge.... I joined BYC in an effort to find answers, finally settled on the chicks we’re picking on my ducks (although I never actually witnessed it). One lost an eye first but interestingly he was the last to perish... My boss and I are going to give ducks another go in a couple weeks once I have the chicks outside.

As far as bees, I’ve also just started my apiary. Ordered a cypress hive from Heartwood up in Pearl. I had two swarms roost under my house (lifted on stilts) last year that I was able to rehome to a beekeeper, hoping I can capture a swarm this year. It seems bees, chickens, and a garden are all complimentary so hope to have a very productive 2019!
