"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I enjoyed speckled Sussex, and I really loved Svart honas. I need them for awhile, and had them free ranging. Excellent little birds, very hardy and self-sufficient. Fierce mothers. Eggs are small and below average production, but they were very neat birds.

Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with mixed birds. They’re usually very hardy and come in so many shapes and sizes. Most of my current flock is mixed birds.

Do you want eggs or pets? I also really love banty cochins. They’re small and funny, good layers and good moms. I had a small flock that free-ranged for a month with no predator losses; I have no idea where they were sleeping at night. They just roamed the grounds and I had a super hard time catching them again.
I have heard great things about speckled sussex! Tell me more of the Svart Honda and availability?

The SH are not as popular as the ayam cemani, but you can find them around. If you weren’t in the city I’d give you the rooster I have left. Are you a member of you local poultry groups on Facebook?

I really like speckled sussex and australorps. Can anyone recommend a breed or breeds to have for pets and enjoyment?

The friendliest pet chickens I ever had were ex-battery hens I got at an auction. They would rub on my legs like cats as I walked through the yard. But they were absolutely brutal to all other birds, so I had to keep them separate. They were excellent layers also. They had clipped beaks, poor things.

I’ve had quite a few breeds, but the Easter eggers, Australorps, and banty cochins are the ones I make it a point to keep around.

They’re pretty chill. Not any louder than other birds. I’ve had maybe a quarter of them go broody. I’m north of Lake Charles, growing zone 9a, and they do fine. In the real hot summer time they need some shade and fresh water, but not moreso than other birds.

They sound pretty awesome! I forgot to ask you the same about the australorps how are they? Do all those breeds get along well?

I think all birds should have some protection from our climate in the form of amble amounts of shade and constant fresh water. They cant sweat and cant cool down without those two things. These breeds are a little more susceptible to heat stroke than the super lightweight fewer feathers varieties but i wouldnt ever give my whole flock of chickens Air Conditioning or it wouldnt be worth keeping them.

The hona are otherwise as mrs camping described, lighter smaller but great foragers, strong survival instinct. I want to add these hens will want to sit. If u steal all their eggs theyre less likely but even then it might happen, usually they're good mothers too.

The wyandottes are also good sitters and mothers. They lay much better than the Hona and were bred for duel purpous meat and eggs so theyre pretty big and meaty compared w just about anything. Lay a grade A egg vs the Honas smallish egg. Light brown in color. Hona is white. Im not sure what else i can add but feel free to ask away any questions!

Anyone know what’s going on here?
