"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Have y'all seen the weather for next week? Are y'all heating your coops for Monday night? I'm still not sure about mine- I'll probably put the heater in ours.

It's more dangerous to run a heater outside with a cord than for the birds to just snuggle. Making sure the everyone has access to unfrozen water, hanging 2 northside tarps to cut wind, a little extra corn in the dinner bowls....more issues with the goats right now.

Jeez, of course every darn mama goat has decided to drop kids to celebrate bad weather. Cannot keep up. I have goats everywhere...and my chickens are gobbling placenta and being really gross.

Ew 🤣 At least there's cute babies?

On a different weather note, did y'all see the 3-6 inches of snow and 0.5 inch of ice forecast Monday? I'm so excited for the chickens to see their first snow!

The weather forecast keeps changing slightly. I was at work during the last snow. We had to shut down our job because we could not see to work - that's how hard it was snowing. If it snows it won't get as cold...but at least I am off Monday & Tuesday.

Good morning! I hope y'all are safe and warm during the ice storm. How did y'all fare? We unfortunately are having limbs break and have shed damage, but nothing too bad. Here's the coop, our Cinnamon Queen hen Peebles, and some of the limbs in our yard.

We lost power early this morning. I brought my FULL incubator to my parents about an hour ago. It was only down about 3 hours.

we expect to get power by Wednesday according to DEMCO. Lot of limbs down. The chicken run itself is fine, but the roof iced over and is cavin in. But once it melts its only deer fencing so it should form back in place. There waterer of course froze but most are takin shelter in there roost house. The few that are out are scratching the ice on ground and drinking/ eating it lol.

They have enough food I think; it looks like the feeder still had about 5 lbs in. And each chicken only eats about 1/4 lb a day. Fyi that function is pretty spot on ; i mix 50 lb crack corn and 50 lb feed ; (100 lb total goes into the auto feeder i built) and it last me 30-35 days. I have 18 chickens. 7-8 can all stand beside each other and eat at one time; tho they only do that when i fill it up or swirl it around to keep the funnel dumping.

Brrr. I have a whole house generator and that's good because the power has been up and down. I have a bathtub full of water buckets and I think my arms are longer than they were last week from hauling so many buckets of water to the animals. My old horse loves warm water with a bit of molasses in it but a couple of goats preferred ditch water/slop water where I dumped the ice...The chickens are fine, they like warm water, too. There are dozens of wild birds hanging out, it's absolute bird-poop chaos in the carport. 🥶

It's been about a month and a half since I took the RIR hen that died to LSU Vet for a necropsy, and I haven't heard a peep (or cluck!) from them. I called this morning because I was sick of waiting, and they transferred me to the diagnostics lab... which was closed. If you need vet care that can't be done at home, I would not recommend LSU Vet. It's very expensive, and they don't call with lab results.
