Hope you are all doing ok with this freezing artic cold here in LA! It is curently 23 degrees here in Sela, (Southern Tangipahoa parish) and I can just imagine what the wind chill is....brrrrrr! I am so ready for this to end as I am sure you are also! I moved down here 16 years ago to get away from these type of temps.

My chicken girls and guys are roughing it, thats for sure. I have everything tarped, lamps, and tons of fresh hay for them and so far, it doesn't seem to faze them too much. They are still laying fairly well, and greet me happily. Of course I have to keep on breaking the ice in their waters. My water hose is froze today so had to lug water. Next week it should begin the warm up. High 50's to close to 60 degrees by mid to end of week. Keep warm until then everyone!

It's crazy cold here too!! I think we were at 19 degrees feels like 14 this morning.. TOO cold that's for sure!! My chickies are troopers though still laying everyday.. Doesn't act like it effects them at all except their water freezing!! I have an open front coop so we put up tarps to keep the wind from them and I put 2 250 watt heat bulbs in there!! Doesn't really keep it warm in there but I think they like it all the same. It makes me feel better!!

I know I'll sure be glad to have the warmer temps come next week!!

Oh yes they just love water they even have webbed feet just like labs do. I have one OL' Scrapper that when we go riding trails on the 4-wheeler he avoids no water holes or deep areas he hits them full steam and if he can't wade them them he swims it. Both of my older Catahoula's were raised over in Avoylles parish right on the Atchafalaya river so water to them is just a normal part of the terrain in fact their daddy is one bad-@$$ alligator fightin' SOB I've seen him come back with his neck split open and his owner stich him up and in a couple of days he a rearin' to go on another killin' spree again.

If you want to learn a little more about your Catahoula, Check out Don Abney and his book on The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog it's got some good reading on their origins and a lot of facts even I didn't know about them and I've had Catahoulas since I was way young and that's been quite a few decades ago.

We made it thru another cold night here 17* this morning, all's well nobody froze to death last night. I posted on the other thread this morning evrbody WATCH OUT for the thawing mud as it's slicker than greased owl crap. 'Bout busted my @$$ with both hands full of 5 gal. buckets of water. It's above freezing now and in the sun its starting to turn back into mud, sure was nice to walk on solid ground for a little bit. It's gonna warm up and more rain this next weekend and I'm not gonna say a bad word about it this time as you know it has to warm up to rain.

I've seen that book....I think I own it...Well, in the summer time, we have a pond in the woods behind our house...I take him there in the summer time. I throw his toy duck and he brings it back. I'm thing of showing him in 4-H....

So good to have new people on this thread. Hope everyone is staying warm. Thank goodness last night was the last of the really cold ones here. Got a plumber coming out this morning. A faucet blew off yesterday afternoon where my cutoff valve is for water to the barn and chicken yard. Of course, hubby left 2 hours before it happened to head to work in Arkansas-always my luck. My neighbor was nice enough to come and plug the water line, thank goodness. But now I have no water to my barn. The water to the barn's been shut off for the past 3 days, and I was hoping I could just open the valve today, and all would be good-no such luck. So, waiting on the plumber now. But if that's the worst that happens, I'm thankful. It's a beautiful day today, just hoping those temps creep up.
