Sounds like you have a great set-up with your vet. I would be concerned if they are claiming to be certified with no proof of documentation. I would definitely have them show proof before purchasing anything.

What is AI certified and why do you need that?

AI - Avian Influenza. This is not provided to us free of charge. We'll have to pay to get this certification. Some states require Pullorium/Typhoid Testing, as well as Avian Influenze testing for shipments entering their state. Since I sell eggs on ebay I never know where the eggs are going until the end of the auction. Therefore, I'll need to add this to avoid problems for myself.

On the birds, I am careful in buying only from NPIP certified people; however, This spring I bought birds from home breeders that advertised on their websites that they were NPIP certified but didn't get the paperwork with the shipment of chicks. On one site they even published their NPIP #. I suspect they're just not following through with the paperwork. Maybe they are like us and are just learning the proper procedures. I also bought some eggs through ebay that the buyer claimed to be NPIP certified but didn't get the paperwork with the shipment. The eggs were damaged in shipment and none hatched. But still the question lingers for me..., are they really NPIP certified?

Welcome to the new people! I have only had my chicks for a week.

Today, we brought 4 of the chicks to pre-k for show and tell. The kids loved it! My little one even said "my chicks!" which is his 2nd or 3rd two-word sentence ever.

AI certification sounds like a good thing. Do you know how much it costs?

I remember the vet telling me about the selling process but I couldn't remember. I knew that I had come upcoming sales, so I wanted to make sure that I provided the necessary paperwork. Thanks to Missi for suggesting that I email the Dr. because that is how I learned exactly what I needed.

Not sure if it matters to those that are NOT NPIP certified. Do you think? My customer that bought my turkey this morning is not NPIP certified, so I explained what the certification is and I gave her a copy of my form anyway.

I saw that someone had an ad online for a breed that I was interested in, so I emailed them and asked them if they were NPIP certified. They sent me back a little smarty mouth reply. I think that they though that I was a "snooty" person in asking if they were certified. I was like oh well.

Aw...., too cute!!! Keep doing what you're doing! Gosh, now you can use these little chicks to teach your little one all kinds of things. New words - identify the parts of the chick, the activities of the chick, the foods the chick eats. (Eat along with the chick). Counting the chicks, substracting, addition (Oh, MORE chicks!
clap.gif
).... -- WOW! Chicken Math!! Colors - get chickens that lay different colored eggs. Science - the body parts and how they function. Compare chicken to self: chicken feet=my feet; chicken tongue=my tongue, etc. Alphabet - ex. the letter "e" for eye, "b" for beak; Phonics - what sound does the letter make? Social Studies - Where did you buy the chicks? What town is that? What State is that? Where did you take them home? What is your place called? What is the address? What is the phone #? Parents name? etc... Geography skills - point to place on map of home. Social Skills what do you get when you're good? More chicks! Yeah! it works for me!!

What if you misbehave? Then, you don't get to play with the chicks. "time out". If you want to give someone a small gift to show you care/love - yes, give eggs! I love it!

Yes; I'm a teacher!!

How cute is that? Sounds like you are starting him off down the right direction --- to the chicks!

Gramby thanks for the info on AI. I'm going to check into getting it if it isn't too expensive.

Julie that's a shame somebody got in a huff just because you asked a simple question. Like you said, Oh well! their loss.

NPIP & AI certifications are not issues as long as you sell inside the state; however, if you cross state lines it becomes an issue. It is actually illegal to send eggs/chicks across state line without proper paperwork.

I didn't get the huffy reply but she was nice enough to explain that in her state it cost a fortune to get it done!! I definetly want at least the number if not the paperwork.
