So now I'm completly dreading someone coming out to tell me what's wrong!! <sigh> It's always something!! All the new babies are fine! Their all outside right now. The only ones I have a lamp on are the 2 week olds!! The meaties are really sweet birds and I just feel so sorry for them. They will literally lay by the feeder and eat. It's crazy. Yea the wax does work since I did that to one when I first set them and it's doing great. I go on lockdown tomorrow and I will give a quick candle and see what's what!! Love the duck pics!!

That flipping dog looks like a monkey!!

amylou22 your coop looks great!! If I could suggest something that might help. Landscape timbers work great and when they go on sale you can get them at home depot for $1.99 each. That's what we used for the whole frame of our run. And then we covered everything in chicken wire!!

Joe Wow you really did some work! Glad you got your garden planted and that your mega bator is doing well!!

Terri Don't have any blooms on the tomatoes but have lots on the cukes & squash!! Can't wait to eat some fresh veggies!!

Yvette Don't forget to post those pics when you get them!!

BlakesWife I've never heard of this!!

Twiley I've been free ranging mine everyday since last summer. Haven't had any problems at all. I lock mine up every night. BUT, my free ranging days are pretty much over. My huuby said "Missi, I love ya but this chicken s#@t on the porch disgusts me. It's time to do something about it!" So, guess I'll have to keep them locked up more now.

Barred Babies, It's a shame that we can't potty train chickens, geese, etc. I had my geese in our backyard and I loved them there. Everything was so nicely weeded

From my geese, I learned where the expression "to poop like a goose" came from.

You wouldn't believe the poop that six geese can generate. My husband didn't like all the poop either. He's a city boy!

I moved them to the back of the yard. They're quite funny. I have this little fence that I made that's only about 18" tall. The fence reaches to the shoulders of the geese and since they can't fly they can't cross the fence. When I go out, they'll come to the fence and look over it. They remind of horses hanging their heads over the fence.

Isn't that the truth!! I don't have a clue how these people that say they trained theirs to stay off the porch with a water hose did it! I sprayed mine to death and they still come up there and crap all over the place!!

Yeah they say they just spray them with the hose everytime they get up there! HA!!! They run off and come right back on!! They don't care!!

Amy... I don't know how many birds you have.. this is my coop and run. The run is made out of culled landscaping timbers and chicken wire. I can always throw a tarp over the exposed portion.. I keep 12 chickens in this. They can run the yard in the afternoon when I'm outside.

Thank you!
I have 8 birds now. My coop is built to accommodate 16, that may not be til next year. I have had so many people ask about buying eggs already. (Also, must happy dance- my mom scored me 2 black trash bags full of dozen-size cartons yesterday!)

I am thinking that I will make the frame out of 2x12's and bury them a few inches. From there, I can do landscape timbers or treated 2x4's. I have a 150' roll of chicken wire (4' tall) but I already used some. Run is planned to be 8x20, including under the coop. May go 8x24.

Thanks again for the help. Lots of posts here (not LA people, but BYC) makes you feel like a failure and that you are just doing it wrong. You can never do as well as so many people here.

Hey there La-yers,

From my experiences they do slow somewhat during to hot humid parts of the summer time- youll notice they stand around panting more than eating as thats there only sorce of radiating heat is respiration and thru their wattles and combs which they dont have much of at young ages. I personally don't hatch after May for this reason and also the gnats are a real bother to them when young a couple of years ago me and my neighbor both lost chicks due to the gnats it absolutely drives them into a frenzey somewhat, getting in their ears and also makes some aweful sores on the exposed combs and they scratch out their feathers from icthing. I usually wait till late Sept. to start any fall hatching myself, but thats just my deal and youll get all kind of differences and it has to do alot with location location location too.

Jeff
