just lost a whole hatch of SPPR's (that I had been waiting on for months!) because when that bad weather came thru a couple of weeks ago,.our electricity went out for hours when an old Katrina tree finally fell on a line down the road. I kept incubating them but candled last night to find they all stopped growing at about 10 days,.(when the lights went out) and I'm sick,.. the temp got down to 74 for along time,.. too long I guess.

so send those broody vibes on and thanks so much!!!

I'm sorry you lost your hatch. Isn't that the most frustrating thing!!

Oh nooooooooooooooooo!!!! I am so very sorry to hear that you lost a whole hatch.

I hate to hear that you are losing sleep as well. I guess that's the good thing about having broody hens. They take care of all of that. The only thing that I do is go in to make sure they have feed, fresh water, change their bedding and listen for the chirping of the little chicks when it's time to hatch. I guess that is easier than having an incubator.

I guess I'll stick to my broody hens.

Will you try incubating any other eggs?

You will have fun with your turkey. I hope that you don't have any of the problems that I had but turkey owners can't avoid the problems in turkeys. Poults (baby turkeys) are THE most difficult babies to raise. When your baby hatches, will it be with other chicks or will it be alone? Have you decided what gamebird feed you'll be feeding it? What percentage of protein? Once it gets older, keep an eye on it's behavior. Anything left unnoticed could end in disaster.

I don't mean to scare you but I'm just speaking from years of experience with turkeys.

Julie, I'll keep my fingers crossed that your turkey's neck will straighten out.

On my turkey egg, for now, if it hatches, it will be a lone turkey. I'm thinking that I will put one or two chickens, or geese with it for company until I can hatch another one -- otherwise, it will be in a pen isolated from the rest of the birds. Raising turkeys will be a learning experience for me. I'll read all about the history of the breed, and rearing practices. I'm very adventurous, and I'd never let a lack of experience stop me from anything I want to do. Heck, my first day of college was when I was 36 yrs. of age.

But, I will pay close attention to any "signals" of distress like you've indicated. I bet I'll enjoy them. I LOVE my geese and many people said how mean they are and that they were hard to raise.

I didn't realize that geese were hard to raise. I never had a problem with raising geese either. On the other hand, my geese are a little evil but I wouldn't 'trade them for anything. They are probably so rowdy because my brother didn't take any time with them when they were babies and then he gave them to me when he had enough of them.

They do keep predators away.

My 2 gosling are so precious. My little guy that I got from Gracie9205 in Lake Charles has gotten so big since I first got him.

Do you know Gracie9205? She has the same breed of geese that you have. She has a bunch that have hatched.

I miss having geese so much. I used to raise white chinese, back when we still had the pasture fencing up. They had plenty of room to run & graze. I never had problems raising them either. Mine were very good moms & hatched their own with no problems.

Ours loved us because they had known us from birth but they sure hated the rest of the world, lol! I used to laugh at them.

One time I was kneeling down talking to them & one snuck up behind me & clamped its' beak down on my ear lobe & sucked a black pear earring right out -- talk about hurt! then ran into the rest of the flock so I had no time to tell which one was the thief!

Love your gosling! With the goslings, I was told that it was hard to get them started. Similar to the turkeys, getting the goslings to eat in the beginning was supposed to be difficult. I haven't found this to be a problem.

I don't know Gracie9205, however, I have had a lady from Lake Charles contact me about comparing our flocks of geese, and possibly trading goslings to diversify bloodlines. I'm waiting for her to get her NPIP certification. I wonder if it's the same lady?

A guy stopped by this weekend to buy some eggs and I had all of the animals out in the "human" yard free ranging and one of my geese attacked him. It happend in less than 3 seconds. When I turned around to tell him something, I saw the geese sticking it's neck out and grabbing on to his pant leg. All I could say was "WATCH OUT". It was too late. The goose had grabbed on and spread it's wing out and was slapping the man's leg with his wing. I couldn't do anything but laugh. The guy was laughing as well.

Geese are funny! Lost earring! and Goose attack!!

One of my geese bit my husband and put a bruise on his leg the size of a softball.

If you're going to have geese, you really do have to spend lots of time loving AND disciplining them early in their lives so that they know the limits. Even then, there are no guarantees because they all have their own personalities. And, during mating season all bets are off!

Thanks everyone for the condolences on my lost hatch,.. I was so dissapointed,.. but we all know that's a risk we take with incubating

,.. and YES I will hatch again! I have Australorp eggs from New York in the other bator,...

Geese!....... ya'll have had me laughing out loud as I read,..

I've only had one,..I had money in my pocket from my Easter Basket when I was 7 and Mom made the mistake of turning us loose at the Rose Garden Center ( feed store),.. in 5 minutes I had bought a cute little "duck" ( my sister bought a rabbit) Well,.. they were the best of friends and I just loved "Duck",.... he was a mess,. spoiled rotten,.. claimed the swing-set as his personal domain,.. we would have to go through an elaborate scheem to get him to the barn and trap him in a stall before we could swing or play on it,..once he figured out our plan,.. there was no hope,.. we finally gave up and let him have it,..
He was lonely though and we eventually gave him to a man with a lady goose and he ended up being the happiest goose ever when the man had an old overgrown swing-set in his yard!
