Long weekend here, we ended up in the ER Friday night thinking Jim was having a heart attack. Thank goodness it wasn't, as far as anyone could tell, his Dr had changed his blood pressure medicine last Monday & that plus dehydration from working outside all day Friday caused him to pass out. It did scare the heart out of me. Needless to say, we didn't get home until Sat morning so that was a lost day, & yesterday I cooked Easter dinner for us & my folks & we spent a quiet afternoon.
Will candle my eggs on Thursday-- hope to see signs of development!
I'm trying to make a decision as to whether I want to stay with a diverse flock or concentrate strictly on my Ameracauanas - and I have the chance to get some really nice Welsummer eggs from the same lines as my remaining 3 hens -- if I do that & get a good hatch, I will sell off my Blue Orpingtons & Black Coppers. Decisions, decisions!
Good morning everyone. I hope that everyone had a great Easter Holiday. I was outside all weekend cleaning the chicken coops and run, peacock aviary, brooder "apartments", rabbit hutches, sheep and goat housing area along with cleaning and disinfecting waterers and feeders. This takes me about 8 hours but I divided the chores up into 3 days (Friday, Saturday & Sunday), so I did a little bit at a time. I was totally exhausted when I hit the bed last night.
It's almost pick up time for my order of guineas. I'm excited about that. I'm determined not to allow these to run away as like all of the others have. I will keep these locked in their own little area for at least 6 months if not longer.
I had a few "strange" visitors this past weekend that stopped by the farm. I was leaving out to run an errand and I saw one guy and his dog hovering over my fence. As I approached him, I could tell that he had a little bit too much to drink. I asked him if I could help him and he said that he was looking to buy some chickens. He said that his chickens came up missing one by one over the past few weeks and now he has none. He said that he thinks that his neighbor stole his chickens. He asked if I had any animals to sell and I told him "NO". He said ok and then continued to hover over the fence. I asked him was there anything else that I could help him with and he said, "NO" but he just wanted to look at all of the animals that I had. I told him that I was busy, so he would have to leave. So, he stumbled away to his car and drove off. I wrote down a description of him and his truck (might I add his truck didn't have a license plate) in the event I returned home and my animals were gone. I was little nervous all weekend but nothing out of the ordinary happened. I will continue to keep an eye out. I keep all of my gates and brooders locked when I am not home, so if someone wanted to steal anything, it would take them a while to cut the chains and pad locks and locks.
The 2nd visitor that I had was a lady who was looking for her dog. Her dog's name was "baby". I asked her for a description of her dog and she gave me a description. I asked her did her dog have tags on with a phone number to call in the event that "baby" stopped by. She said yes, that the dog has tags but not to call the number on the tags. I was like, "HUH". She said that the dog belonged to someone else down the road but the dog had been going over to her house since October 2010, so I should call her and not the number on the tag. I thought to myself, "Lady are you for real"? Now that she told me that the dog is NOT hers, I WILL NOT call her. I will call the number on the dog tag and return the dog to his owner. I have been looking for "baby" ever since. Just weird.
Anyway, the weather is beginning to get really hot, so now I have to take those extra percautions to make sure that all of the animals remain cool have plenty of shade and have cool water throughout the day.
I hope that everyone is continuing to hatch all of those cute fuzzy butts with no problems. Have a great time with all of your new babies and post pics when you can. I really enjoy looking at everyone's pics and videos. Thanks for sharing everyone. It's always good to see others who love animals as I do.
