i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

The calendar claims Spring starts on March 1st. Realistically ... nope! We'll still have some nasty winter weather for a bit, but winter's lost it's psychological power over me. Old Man Winter will still have one more go at us, even after he fakes us into believing he's gone for the year ... but he's just being a muscle-stretching bully. Until he's made that last intimidation move, I don't trust him! Once he's done flexing his muscles that last time ... then and only then will I start planting!
Planting is going to be all messed up this year. I can’t see that snow going until well into March.
Harrumph.

some days in january and february can be like spring here, and there's all this excitement, and i get out in the garden for a bit. then the next day it will be cold and rainy and grey. sometimes in the summer it can be cold and rainy and grey. you just never know!
i have to plant tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in a greenhouse or they will surely die. i am a person who should live somewhere warm, where there's no creatures that can eat me and no big bugs. there's no such place, is there?

I feel your pain! I need warmth, too!
I've considered moving for years, but can't find anywhere that fits the bill but is still within either affordable airfare of driving distance of my huge family here in The States (US) - and believe me, I've looked!

I don't mind the bugs & such. My issue is with the "natural disaster factors" so ...

  • No earthquakes for me, so no West Coast.
  • No Tornado Alley for me, either. One close tornado call was enough, so there go the Midwest & Central US.
  • No major hurricanes, either. We get enough hurricane/tropical storm damage from the aftermath of everyone else's as the monsters barrel their way up to New England. That effectively rules out the Southeast, Dixie & Texas.
  • And, speaking of New England (and you can throw the upper Midwest and pretty much all of the northern border states,) I don't want or need to measure the snowfall climbing over my windowsill from inside the house! So nope, Michigan and Massachusetts were nice places to visit Grandma, but I'll stay right here in the closest place to perfect I've found - Maryland, smack-dab in the middle of the Mid-Atlantic coast.
  • We have a bit of snow in the winter (and a bit too much ice, but hey, every place has its' drawbacks!) We have springs you won't miss if you actually have to blink. We get beach-hot, but not grueling summers and fall colors that can make you cry, even though sometimes its because they mean that winter's coming back!
  • And for colors, I require "green," which requires water - either on the ground or falling from the sky on occasion. My sister can keep her Southwest heat and dust-storms!
  • In just a few hours, I can be at the beach or in the mountains and in under an hour, I have my choice of decent airports to deal with that "affordable airfare" issue, should it arise. So, despite my constant fussing about the weather, I'm pretty content with where I live. I don't think I'm going too far anytime soon
But I STILL want my flip-flops back!

i get you!

when it does get warm here, it's perfect.

And I always thought it depended on if Phil saw his shadow 🤣
Phil is usually right. If he sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of Winter. If he doesn't, we can expect Spring to arrive "on-time," ... which is in about more six more weeks! (minor edit!)
:plbb :tongue :he

We got almost 10 inches - twice what the "official reports" claim. As of today, with two days having an hour or two of above freezing (32-34F) temps ... we still have EIGHT of them!

That's about like having a broken watch it's at least right twice a day

If the rodent was a female we’d be over the winter $hit a lot sooner!
Off my soapbox now.

I think I have you beat. I got about 14-16” on top of the 4” I already had and it hasn’t gone above freezing yet!
Supposed to get to 32F today briefly before plunging back to single digits.
I am so over this!

I’ve never planted seeds into snow before, but I’m doing it tomorrow - a winter forage mix. 10-day forecast still includes most nighttime lows below freezing, but mid-thirties to even low-fifties for daytime highs. One way or another, it’s seeding time.
