I will have several dog kennels that I use for my chicken coops for sale later this fall. They have been safe for my chickens and I have used them for a few years. The only problems I've had with them was from my own dogs tearing into them. I don't have vicious predators right now, other than my dogs, that threaten my chickens. When I move I won't be able to use them because on our property we have numerous predator threats and I'll have to beef up my chicken pens. I've found these pens to be a fast and easy setup.

Geez maybe I don't want a broody after all! what a headache!
Maybe you can give them all a bunch of golf balls & let them steal those back & forth!

.
Four hens! That's funny. My three Sussex hens have been sharing a nest. With me gone so much lately I just let them have their eggs. Every once in a while I find a chick or two. There was another chick today when I got back home.

I'm still trying to get Mike some Sebastopol geese. I bought four eggs the other day and was going to try them in my incubator but decided to let a buff set on them instead. I'll have to go out and candle them to see if they're any good.

My ducks are fighting the horse fighting the pig whose fighting the chickens over the waterhose....lol....

SAME thing here! gorgeous dark clouds, thunder, etc -- could actually SEE the rain down the highway----NOTHING here! NOTHING!!!
Out w/the waterhose again---garden's almost dried up to nothing by now except for pole beans, eggplants & tomatoes. Can't really complain as have put up a ton of stuff, but was hoping to keep some of it going a bit longer---note to self: next year stagger planting of garden!

I'm ready for the weekend. Insomnia the past couple of nights is driving me crazy!

Gosh! You guys are having fun smacking each other!

Well, I'm going to join in on the fun, too. Today, when I got home with my new geese, before I had a chance to fill their kiddie pool it started raining. We had a real "gully washer". I hope you got rain, too. If not,

Those bird dogs are something else.I've had fits with our Golden Retrievers. Gone through the same kinds of issues. Her chain link kennel is so patched up from her escapes. There's actually two fences now holding the kennel together (Chain link & horse fencing) and we still regularly reinforce the attempted break throughs. I've tried the shock collars only to have her sit by the fence and watch the fence as her neck is jerked back and forth from the shocks.

It made me feel like an animal abuser!

She's the only dog I know of that can break out of one kennel and into another one at will. One day she broke into two kennels. And, of course, once she's in everything gets killed. Her prison is almost ready!

My chickens will celebrate!!

I returned from my goose run, however, it didn't quite go as planned.

My five geese that were said to be "show quality" -- well, I couldn't really show any of them. However, I'm hoping that the genetics are there so that I can hopefully breed some nice birds. A couple of the birds have some wing issues. Sebastopols are prone to twisted wing tips and angel wing due to their twisted feathers. Although, the lady told me that they had had major problems with snapping turtles in their pond. One of their ducks lost a leg, a goose lost a wing, and one of the Sebastopols had been bitten on the wing but they were able to save his wing. Therefore, I don't know how much of the wing issues are genetic and how much is due to nagging attacks by the turtles. I've read that a lot of the wing issues with Sebastopols are due to injury and/or diet. I'm going to breed them in the spring and see what happens.

On the four pairs of Sebastopol geese for Mike, that was a total disaster. The geese looked fairly nice in the pictures the lady sent me, However, when I got to see the geese they looked very unhealthy and neglected. Most of the geese had their long back feathers missing. During breeding season, the males will fight (some fight to the death) like roosters do. When I asked which geese were paired together the lady could not tell me. She told me that they just all ran together and that they had set in the barn. She said they had a few more but that the coyotes had gotten them. Interestingly, when I asked about the buff saddleback, she didn't know which one of her geese was the saddleback, although, she had sent me a picture of the buff saddleback and told me it was a female in the email. However, when I met with her she told me it was a male.

Initially, I was going to purchase three pairs but then she told me that a lady had backed out of a sale so she had four pairs to sell. When I hesitated on buying all four pairs she insisted that she wanted them all to go together. I found that odd since she was going to sell one pair to someone else. Another issue was that they were basically wild. They ran into a corner of the pen screaming to get away from us. I felt sorry for them! I explained to the lady that my plan was that they'd have to stay in my SUV overnight because it was too far for me to drive home. Also, I already had picked up five geese that were in my car. She offered a cage for them but I had no place for a cage. When I offered to possibly buy the pair of saddlebacks and asked which were the pair, she became quite upset and insulted me by saying, "That's why I'm getting out of this business. People come here and they don't know what they want." I was nice, ladylike, and maintained my self respect -- What I wanted to tell her was that, "If you CARED about your birds instead of the MONEY that you could make selling them, then, maybe people would be lined up at your door to buy your birds!!!"

I'm sure that most of us have realized by now that we will spend as much, if not more, on our birds than we will ever make selling them or their offspring. We raise them because we love the hobby.

So, needless to say, I'm back to searching for Sebastopols.
