"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey- for your feral cat see what your vet prescribes, ours told us to use Terramycin which was $30 at the office, but it's only $12 a tube from JeffersLivestock.com ( http://www.jefferslivestock.com/product.asp?camid=LIV&pn=N2-J1&cn=3107 ). It's a steroid-free eye cream so it's good to keep on hand as it won't irritate if the cat has an ulcer or something more serious.

It's always good to take them to the vet but if you don't have the time sometimes it might just be easier to apply the meds for a few days and see if the antibiotic takes care of the problem. Our cat has droopy inner eyelids and has had a lot of problems so our vet advised us to just keep some of the ointment on hand.

Wow! Terri, that's pretty impressive about your grandfather's Ford.

On the roos, I'm not too concerned. I'll see how difficult he is to handle. I really hate to lose him because he is so big and beautiful. Very soon, him and I are going to have a "come to Jesus" meeting. The next time he comes at me like he did this morning I'm going to kick him across the kennel. If he accepts defeat and submits that I'm the tougher rooster it'll all be finished with. If not, we can go a few more rounds. With my geese, I'd carry them around for a while and pet them, or I'd grab them by their necks and squeeze their necks for a few seconds to get their attention. It doesn't take them very long to figure out that I'm not going to play their game. If I can't break him I'll use him for breeding until I can get a good start on some baby chicks. After that he'll be gumbo this winter. As big as he is he'll make a BIG pot of gumbo.

Nothing wrong with wanting a job to buy a new incubator. It's nice to look forward to getting something you want as a reward to yourself for a job well done.

Good morning everyone. What a long day on yesterday. I made it to the vet and back. When I got there and signed in, the vet assistant asked was I picking up meds today. I looked at her and said, “Well, not exactly”. She gave me the stink eye as to say, “You know your feral cats are banned from here right?” I looked at her and began to explain that I have a cat that I need checked out because her eyes were running and she was sneezing. She then says, “You have a cat with you today?!” I said, “Yes.” So she asked where was it. I looked down at the floor and told her that it was in the pet carrier. She looked at me and said, “OK, the vet will be with you in a minute.” So, I waited until they called my name. The girl that called my name directed me to a room that I had NEVER been in in all of my visits to the vet. So, I put the pet carrier on the table and the girl begins to ask question. For a quick moment, I look around to see if the vet was coming in but then I looked at the girl’s scrubs and noticed that she was a vet. So, I guess my regular vet persuaded her to look at the my cats so that she could be initiated into the “Julie’s Feral Cats Club.” So I explained the symptoms to her and she looked in the pet carrier. She asked me can she handle the cat. I told her, “SURE, you can try.” She looked at me and said, “What does that mean.” I told her that this cat was more tame than the others, so she would be able to touch it. So, she opens up the pet carrier and took the cat out. I helped her and took the cat out so that the cat wasn’t too afraid of her and tear the vet’s eyes out. Everything went well. My cat had an upper respiratory problem, so she gave her a shot of Clavamox (which is what I always pick up anyway but wanted to make sure). I also bought a few bottles home with me. She looked at my record of visits/purchases and she said that in the future, I can just continue to come by and just get whatever meds I need instead of bringing the cats in unless it’s a major emergency and they need advanced medical care. I told her ok. Before I left, I also asked her if I could get a large volume of meds for my farm animals, being as though they don’t treat chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc. She asked me what did I need, so I told her that I needed to stock up on Baytril in the event I have a problem during the week or after hours and I am not able to get to their office. I told her that Baytril was THE strongest “prescribed” meds that I knew of that I could give to my animals if they have any type of infection. She said no problem and asked me did I need any other meds. I told her that I couldn’t think of anything but if I did, could I come back and get whatever I needed. She said of course. So after that, I got my meds and checked out and made it back safe. So my cat will be just find. I just have to give the Clavamox 2 times a day.

The rest of the day was ok. I went to the opening celebration of a new restaurant (Cochon) that will be opening in Lafayette. The food was fabulous!!!

It was a beautiful day and a great night. I hope everyone had a good day yesterday and have a good day today.

If my heart will let me,. I'm hoping to make it to the St Tammany parish fair,.. DH says he will get me a wheelchair and take me to see everything,. maybe some of you will be there?
Take care ya'll

Glad to see you online. I bet Olivia is enjoying being in charge. I hope that you get a chance to make it to the fair. I love going to the fair.

That is so funny about those cats at that vet’s office. Poor workers. They have a hard time don't they.

I was laughing too -- my vet office people duck & run when they see me come through the door with a live trap & feral cat inside! But I will give them credit; they do what they can to help them.

Good to see you up & posting BayouPoules! hope you continue to improve.

Been the week from hell here w/taking care of my Mom & all, but she is a tiny bit better today -- listen, do not DO NOT ever take the flu and pneumonia vacs at the same time!! Her arm is finally looking normal but we are still battling the nausea & weakness from all of that. She will never take these vaccines again. Mom will be 80 on 11-11 this year. When she is 100%, I have a hard time keeping up with her. I hope that happens again soon.

I baked bread this morning & have chicken leg quarters boiling for chicken & dumplings tonight -- if that doesn't set Mom right, I don't know what will.

Have a good weekend all!!

Terri, I really like the people at my vet's office because they do the same. They will help with whatever I need. Gotta love them.

Terri, I must have missed the post about your mom. I didn't know that she was sick. I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope that she makes a full recovery.

Funny thing you mention baked bread. I woke up yesterday morning craving a piece of baked bread. I bet your bread was delicious.

How were the dumplings? Did that set Mom right?

LOL @ used the wallpaper for traction.

I would have LOVED to see that. I think vet's offices should intall a camera to tape the feral cats as they are brought in for treatment. Would be kinda nice to see a feral cat tear up a vet's office on YOUTUBE.

Morning peeps....

Long day yesterday.Cleaning house and picking up a lil here and there outside.Got a lil warmer yesterday than the last few days..ugghh...lol...Sorted birds out and got them all seperated by size for now.Except for the Silkies/Showgirls have their own pen.Their was enough of them to warrant their own...lol... Since I still have 1 1/2 pens to cover, the guineas were jumping back and forth between the two...lol..

Had to go pick my son up down the road.At first I thought he done got into trouble or something from his voice. He says Where are you? I say home. Him: I need you to come get me...(he had ridden his bike to a friends earlier in the day.the friend is a good kid,I grew up with his mom,but the neighborhood is going downhill since the influx of N'awlin-ers after Katrina.)My first thoughts,Why? what happened...well he was sick.Said he thinks he's overheating. So I jump in the car and go find him. They are on the side of the road with their bikes(were riding home from another friends house playing football) He didnt look good.I think he may have had a mild heat stroke or something. They said he started throwing up his food and feeling bad.I brought him home and had him sleep on the couch so I could keep an eye on him. He's doing better this morning.Up and moving around.

Julie,do you have your ferals vaccinated yearly?Lots of ferals carry FeLeuk or FIV.These cause recurring respiratory type illnesses.
Jeffers has a few things. When I don't pick up from one of my vets,I use KV vet supply,Jeffers,Cutler pheasant supply and valley vet(I think)....Just out of curiosity Julie...How much did you pay for your Baytril and what size bottle?

Terri...glad to hear your mom is doing better.I'm sure it was the chicken & dumplins and fresh bread...that sounds sooo yummy.

How do you guys make your gumbo? I mostly mean your base or stock? and what are your other ingredients?Even though I grew up on the bayou foods,I'm still not much for fish gumbo or tomato based? gumbo. My favorite combonation for my household is ham/chicken/shrimp/sausage one of the boys doesn't like crabs,so we very seldomly add crab. But around here Ive tasted sooo many nasty versions of gumbo.and some I wont taste.(bologna gumbo?) I tried some the other day that was a tomato based soup. To me gumbo should have a kinda thick consistancy with roux and file. This had no roux,no file, tomato water kinda base....

Sorry to hear about your son. Glad to hear that he is up and moving around. The heat can really take a toll of people.

Yes, I get all of my ferals vaccinated. The vet charged me $1.50 per Baytril tablet, which is MUCH cheaper than what I paid when I took my turkey to the avian vet in April of this year and he prescribed Baytril 136 mg - 7 tabs and it was $42.82. So that was a whopping $6.00 per tablet. If you know of where the tabs are sold cheaper, just let me know.

As far as my gumbo, I use flour and oil (old fashioned way) and of course (onions, bell peppers, etc). I like using chicken/sausage/shrimp and will sometimes add okra. I know that everyone can't make gumbo, so I don't eat too many other gumbos. My neighbor was so nice that she bought over a bowl of gumbo on Friday night. I thought that I was going to eat it on Saturday but I was wrong. I heated it up, smelled it and tasted it and THREW IT IN THE TRASH.

Worst gumbo I have EVER tasted.
