The way I understand it, basic layer feed only has the minimal protein needed for layers -- if you have medium or heavier breeds it helps to "boost" it -- people also use cat food or fish meal - if you do a search on the Feeding link you'll find all kinds of things. I just happen to like calf manna because we've used it on other farm animals all of my life. I just add a handful or so to their feed & not every day, just a couple times a week. I also add a scoop or two of the gamebird conditioner that I feed my peacocks (peas need higher protein levels than chickens) to the chickens' feed a couple times a week.
Whiskey Bay I sure wish you'd do something for that mangy little bird - it sure does look pitiful!
