No, I don't vaccinate but I do adminster meds as needs and I do de-worm. However, the 40 pullets that I ordered from Ideal last week will get the Maerk's vaccination before they are shipped to me. Some people do vaccinate and some people don't. There is a thread on BYC where all of the "old timers" who have 20+ years and more chicken experience are discussing their practices and the discussion about chemical wormers, etc is being discussed.

All of the chicks I ordered were vaccinated for Maerk's. The problem that I have run into with doing this myself is one you have to buy a lg bottle of the stuff and you have to dis guard it with-in three hours of mixing it. Oh and yes, you have to mix the entire bottle at one time. I know that this is not the best way to do it but I have some chicks that were born 2 weeks ago and some this week. I'm doing them all this weekend. From what I have read, the best time to do it is right when you take them out of the incubator.

Thanks, y'all. I've never ordered hatchery eggs. I started with chicks from a local breeder. I've never vaccinated. Just wondered if it was something I should be doing. I'm going to go read that thread now. Thanks!!

It dont. I just feed Lone Star medicated chick starter from day one, for two months then Lone Star non-medicated grower for months 2-4. All my birds at least 2 months old or older get wazine 17 in there drinking water followed two weeks later with three drops of Ivomec by mouth with a syringe. Bout to go to capsule by mouth insted though its easier than Ivomec with a syringe. I do that every two or three months.

I never vaccinated mine either. I do same as Cadjien.

I am rich!

Yesterday afternoon I scored a big box of Meyer lemons right off the tree!!!! I am fixing to pack up some of them to send to my MIL in Wisconsin & to my dear friend in NY. Then I'm going to make two lemon chess pies.

Then I'm going to juice the rest, freeze the juice in ice trays, & bag the lemon cubes to put in the freezer for future use!

I am officially rooster free here. Thurs evening the one remaining rooster, a Welsummer went just crazy wild -- I heard all kinds of shrieking & ran outside to find him on top of one of the smallest pullets - he would not get off her & was yanking her so hard she had a wound on the back of her head. I ran inside the coop to kick him off & he came at me. This was right before dark & she ran in the coop & he ran in after her -- the rest were already inside on the roost for the night. I closed the coop up & went back to the shed & got my crate. Took it out to the coop & went inside & when I grabbed him off the coop, all heck broke loose -- he fought like the dickens but I wrestled him into the crate. Yesterday morning I took him down to the bayou & shot him - no way I was going to stick my hand back in that crate - I still have scars from my last 2 encounters with roos -- & threw him in the bayou. I've had it. From now on I will just maintain my little flock (14) of laying hens & when they are gone I'll just buy more pullets from one of you all. I'm done raising chickens. And I will never again have another rooster!

Well time to go cook up some bacon & pancakes! Have a good weekend everybody!

OMG! The only human aggressive rooster I have is a little silkie (totally for sale-free if anyone wants him) and he weighs all of two pounds. I just stay away from him. My two BCM roosters aren't aggressive with us, but go a little overboard with the hens as I have several missing back feathers.

I don't understand it. There are two of them and at least 25 hens...horny little bastards.

Jealous of your lemons!!!

I had my husband cull the weakest chick yesterday. I could tell it wasn't going to make it, and I woke up to another dead one this morning. WORST HATCH EVER!! I have three left, and one has a bum leg-I have it band-aided right now trying to fix it. Definitely done with hatching until we have more stable weather.

Wow you've really had a time of it with roosters huh?? Crossing my fingers I've yet to have an aggresive one!!

That's awesome on the lemons! I lost all 3 of my trees a couple of years ago!!

Hope you have a great day!!

I think that I have decided that any roosters I keep in the future will be kept penned up. I had one jump on my 2yr old little girl about a month or so ago and that was more than enough for me. Got rid of both my roos after that.

Well my project for this morning was to get all the chicks off the dining room table....lol. Don't know why the wife has a problem with that!! So anyway, I made me a little brooder box to go into my outside utility room. I still need to make a top with wire but so far I like it, nice and roomy. I made the partition in the center so that it slides up and out if I want one big open box. I was going to stain it or paint it but I needed to get the chicks in as soon as possible so I guess I'll get around to doing that in the spring.

What ya think? And yea I guess I'll have to paint the utility room in the spring to, lol.
