I got eggs from Banjoe twice and ended up with 4 chicks that way. 2 Roos and I don't know about the other two yet. I then bought a pair of 4 month olds...a roo and a pullet. Hopefully I will have more in the near future.

I just put mine in the incubator this morning. I'm hoping to at least get a trio out of them

Yea, let me know what you end up with....how many and what sex (when they are old enough) I'm also getting 10 chicks in about 6 weeks so if you need something I might be able to help you out with something.

Good morning everybody! How are ya'll doing this fine Sunday?

I let the girls out to roam yesterday (after not seeing the stray dog all day -- maybe they understood what I said about keeping him penned up so he wouldn't try & kill my peas & chickens- one can hope)--they sure had a blast & so did we -- it's so much fun to watch them scratching around.

Pondering my summer garden, as time to start seeds in a couple more weeks. I've kept notes since 2007 on my garden & weeded out good from bad.

Tomatoes: Bella Rosa, Tomande, Creole, Arkansas Traveler and Sweet Chelsea (cherry)- all these have done well consistently & I plant some of them every year.

I like to try at least 1-2 new tomato varieties each year -- Any suggestions? Anybody do heirlooms, like the Cherokee Purple? what works for you?

Also, does anybody have a particular bell pepper that works? I raise hot peppers just fine but for some reason have very poor luck with bell peppers. Maybe it's our soil here.

Rhode Island Red eggs rocking away in the Brinsea; I LOVE this 'bator! it has maintained rock steady temps & humidity since I put them in.
 
Hey Terri, glad that the girls are enjoying themselves.

Good luck with the garden. I'm getting mine together as well. I want it to be very productive. I'm going to have a boring garden, so I can't offer any suggestions. I'll only have bell peppers, purple onions, green onion tops, tomatoes, corn and garlic. Those are my favorite.

What kind of fertilizer do you use Terri. My bell peppers do very well. I use rabbit fertilizer, so I don't know if that helps or not.

Congrats on the RIRs. I can't wait for mine to hit the ground and laying eggs.

and use it all garden season long. The litter out of the biddy boxes/under their coops works the best. I guess its the most concentrated and most definitely out of the best feed for sure.

Terrie on the Bell peppers make sure to have them planted in a good sandy loam soil for drainage (not clay type as they don't root deeply anyhow) and just use good composted chicken manure for fertilizer. Its all I do and mine literally break the limbs off they produce such yields.

and there's my problem -- our soil is the red clay type here -- good for growing cotton but not veggies!

IDK, I think I'm going to skip the bell peppers & just grow a couple of salsa peppers, a couple of eggplant, zucchini, squash -- & a ton of tomatoes-- & cukes! skipping the pole beans this year, maybe a row of crowders or bush, something I don't have to stick.

I planted some lettuce & radishes today, in my raised bed where I have herbs in the spring.​
 
Not sure if this has been done before like this but I thought it was a good idea....

I built a little play pen to put the youngsters in so that they could get a little fresh air. What I did was built 4 panels and used hinges to hold them together. The idea being that I pull the pins on the hinges and each panel can come apart when I don't need the play pen to be up. It just makes it easier for me to store the panels when I'm not using them. I can also build more panels and make this thing as big as I want it.

So what ya think....good idea or what?
