"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

JEFF!!!!!! you can have my RIR roosters - I'll even bring them to you!!! when do you want them? I can't tell who's who yet-

Julie, I ordered my Brinsea (I assume that's what you're asking -- I'm at home on the old slow computer & can only see 1/2 of the screen here - other 1/2 is full of the scrolling stuff --
direct from them anyway, their website is www.brinsea.com & the phone is 888-667-7009 - I got the Octogan 20 Eco & auto-turner - they have a 2 year guarantee which is good. Mine was $99 on sale & the auto-turner was about 1/2 that - but boy it was worth it! - like I said, I got 100% hatch on the shipped RIR eggs!!!

as soon as we get our tax refund I'm getting a new home computer so hopefully these issues will resolve then. I know I can see the whole screen & everything's much faster on my work computer -- but don't have time during work to be here much!

After reading all the posts and info on the Brinsea bators, I am definitely leaning in that direction. Wow, though, Terri! You got a great deal on yours! Now the sale price of the 20 Eco is $119.99 and the sale price of the auto-turner is $59.99. Even with the discount code from Facebook, the setup is just under $200 shipped.

Hi, all! My hubby and I have been trying to get everything done so we can finally get some chicks! The fence is complete and we should finish our coop and run next weekend. So exciting!

So....now I need to find some chicks! I don't want to order from a hatchery because my children may want to show them. I've heard that many hatchery birds don't do well for exhibition; besides, I would prefer to get them from someone local if possible. My wish list is below. Will any of you have any of them available soon? I would like to end up with around 20 hens, so I know I will need quite a few more chicks to be sure I end up with that many.

Australorps
Buff Orpingtons
Sussex - Light or Lavender
Plymouth Rocks - partridge or silver penciled
Wyandottes - would LOVE to have golden laced or blue-laced red with deeper mahogany coloring! I was going to order some chicks from Foley's, but I'm hoping to find someone near me that has them.

If anyone has hatching eggs rather than chicks, I would be willing to buy a bator! Anybody?

Thanks!
I am suppose to be taking a drive by the end of the month to Alabama to pick up some Good Shepard Barred Rocks. This guy also has Buff Orpingtons that he shows. If you tell me early enough I can give you his contact info so you that you can talk to him on the phone or e-mail. If you buy anything from him, I will be glad to pick them up for you when I go to get my birds. I live in Covington and will be at the thing next month but I also go to BR all the time so you could get them sooner then March 18th. I'm not sure what else he has but I know he has those two.

I believe he has both eggs and chicks that he sells.

I called them to today and the person that I talked to said that you put water in it when you first put your eggs in and when you see that the water is evaporating, then you add more water.
So, when you say "dry hatch", do you mean that you don't have water in there every day?

Exactly! I just leave the little vent all the way open and go! It's usually plenty humid down here in the south, so I don't find the need for it

Julie,
It's more important to have some humidity in the bator the last 3 days. Like Gracie said....the humidity is so high down here anyway it really don't matter to much.

Look at it this way...all the humidity does in the first 18 days is slow down the rate of evaporation out of the eggs. The higher the humidity the slower the evaporation, the less humidity the faster the evaporation rate. In the last 3 days...the higher humidity allows the chick to move around in the eggs without getting stuck once the eggs has been peeped. When the egg is peeped the liquid tends to exit out of the shell faster then the chick can get himself out. By keeping an egg in a humid environment while this peeping is taking place it helps prevent shrink rapping by not allowing this liquid to evaporate to fast.

You can find out all kinds of information by doing a search on this sight and by googling incubating chicken eggs. There are tons of opinions but what I wrote above is the reader's digest version (the short of it) of the way that I understand it all. Basically It is thought that by having the humidity to high in the first 18 days, the chick will drown before it peeps. I've done both, dry hatches and 50% humidity the first 18 days then 65-70% the last 3 days and have found not to much different in the two but it's really hard to compare the two with shipped eggs because there is so many different variables involved. Get the bator and try both ways with your own eggs....it's only as complicated as YOU want to make it.

I have two incubators, one for cooking (the first 18 days) the other for hatching (the last 3 days). This allows me to do staggered hatches. I try and put eggs in the incubator (the incubator that does the cooking) at least 5 days apart. this give the eggs/chicks in the incubator that I use for hatching time to hatch and dry off and for me to clean it out before I put the next set of eggs in it to hatch. I have 400.00 tied up in these two incubators and had I been smart about it I should have spent a little more money and got a big unit like Mike has. With the number of birds that you sell....it will pay for itself in a year.

Also I would be willing to loan you one of mine to try if you want but we would have to wait a week or two to get all my eggs on the same time frame so I can go back to using just one incubator. Both of my bators are the Genesis 1588 and they require little to no work at all through out the entire 21 days your eggs are in there.

I would love to get his information from you. That is an amazing offer and greatly appreciated!

Good morning La-yers.

I ordered my 1st incubator on yesterday. I ordered the Octagon 20 ECO with Autoturn cradle. The final price was $198.98. Shipping was a bit expensive in my opinion but I can't complain. I blame it on my "cheapness". :)

Thanks to everyone who provided input on what I should get. And thanks to Missi for telling me about their Facebook page and getting a code. I did find a code for 10% off and I was able to use it.

They said that I should have it by Friday. I'm having it sent to my job because someone has to sign for it and I work during the day and would not have been at home upon delivery.

Now you all have to promise me to be ON CALL (on BYC) when I start tearing my eyes out because I can't operate the thing. :gig

Although I specifically made it clear to the lady on the phone that I needed an incubator that a 5th grader could operate, I'm hopeful. :/ Contrary to popular belief I am NOT Smarter Than A 5th Grader like the game show on TV.

Wish me Luck. :fl

Congrats Julie! I was amazed at how fast they shipped mine - and you'll be just great with it! It really is about the most foolproof incubator I've ever used. now if my foolish peas would just get on track & start laying so I can put it to good use!!

Time to open shop back up; have a good afternoon everybody!
