ETA- forgot my manners this mornin': How do there La-yers and BYCers

Yeah I see that and the same problem I have now is the keyword "young" layers. I have sold all but 7 of my yearling layers and those I plan on keeping to hatch some more from. I can't get rid of my "seed" as these are my rendition of production reds they are a bit altered from just plain ol everday hatchery reds I got about 5 years in these culling and picking out de creme de la creme ones and dark dark ones. These are not the multi-shaded reds you'll most likely get from the feed stores and hatcheries these are one of a kind so to say. I get eggs when Nobody else does for sure.

I do have quite a few 2 and 3 year olds but everyone wants the first year pullets right now, but the others will sell in a couple of months when the bug hits everybody for fresh eggs during the spring-time months and I'll be there locked and loaded and hope they hit that 20-25 dollar range again like they did last year. I'm going to unload on them, might kill the market but I plan on getting mine this year. I need to down-size here so bad as I've got 3 projects that I want to get up and going, but with what I have to put up with daily hinders my want to right now, if you know what I mean.

Besides I brought I 193 eggs last Thur. and Fri. I do not need that volume here as I'm already full up here my fridge only holds 80 dozen at a time.

Yeah I'm only running around 55 to 60 % production rate here right now, that's why I need to get shed of about 50 to 75 more hens before they all start laying daily. It won't be long till most any chicken should be at 100% unless they are just a poor laying breed or old as the hills (which I don't have any of) so in a few weeks 130 eggs a day will be too overwhelming for me to handle for sure, so some's gotta go.

So If ya'll know of anybody wanting layers I got 'em for sale(not on sale) they'll have to come get them as I'm not shipping any or delivering to far from here, just not worth the money that way. I could sell these now(I've had lots of cheapos call me) for 5 dollars each but I'm not going to do that either. The way I see it, those people can buy them some biddies and raise them up till they lay and then they'll see what's invested and still don't get no eggs for 6 to 8 months, and see then if they can get them to laying before the weather gets bad or have to wait till next year to get fresh eggs 'cause they don't know how to get them to produce all year round. Oh well I shall get of the soap box and go FEED the chickens again LOL

GOT EGGS?

WOW!!! That's a lot of work!

I hear ya about the cheapos. I get them all the time as well. IF I have any extra layers and I doubt I will, I will probably sell a few but I won't have that many. I'm needing my layers for eggs. My list of customers have grown and I have expanded to providing eggs to bakers and local restaurants. In our area, a lot of the restaurants are going "local". They are only buying products from local farmers, etc. I was lucky enough to get 3 restaurants who have been buying my duck and chicken eggs. And they are willing to pay extra. It really helps out the local people in my area. So, I need all the layers I can get, which is why I bought 40 RIRs.

If you lived closer you could make a killing. I have people that stop by my place every weekend wanting chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys and I just don't have any to sell right now. EVERYBODY is wanting laying hens right now and hens for gumbo. I have a waiting list for my turkeys, so as soon as they are old enough, they will be sold.

I can't imagine your feed bill. :th

I must say that changing the feed from layer pellets to Flockraiser has shown a tremendous increase in egg production. I still can't figure that one out. :idunno

Sounds like everyone will be busy busy busy.

Should be fun for us all.

Hi, all! I haven't been on the forum much, so I'm not sure where to post this. I am looking to add some chicks to our flock as we've lost a number to predators lately. We've taken care of the problem and are ready to grow again. Any one know where I can buy chicks in the Lafayette area? We're looking for some RIR and easter-eggers, but we'd also like a few more unique ones like Silkies, Marans, Frizzles....

THANKS!
Charlene

Yeah I hear ya on the paying extra my sister takes my eggs to Leesville with her once a week or so and those people pay her 2.50 a dozen for fresh eggs, around here I try to raise my price from 1.50 to 2bucks they act as if the world has come to a halt even though the dammed feed has gone up 3 bucks in less than 2 years these old so an so's around here are stuck back in 1983 when I was selling them for a 1 a dozen and feed was 5.50 to 6 bucks a sack then too IT JUST Don't add up too me.

I hear ya about increasing the prices. I increased my egg prices but none of my customers complained or asked why. They said ok and was done with it. They understand about feed prices, gas prices and all other prices going up.

Feed ain't cheap (even with a coupon). ;)

Good luck on your plowing and planting.

Hey Charlene. Great to see you again. I'm not sure who has any RIR or EE in the Lafayette area. You could always post an ad on Craigslist. TSC is having chick days. You can call them and see if they have what you're looking for.
