"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I doubt that will ever happen guys as you only have to be NPIP if you're going to be selling chicks commercially. You see why I say it's a big deal to be made of, now when you brought those chicks/chickens onto your place the NPIP on the others is all out the window. I don't see the effort for what it's worth. Just sayin' :) . Mrs. kathyinmo has sent out chicks all over the USA and not a one is NPIP and do you think that has slowed down her business she is so far behind she'll never get all her orders filled,

Anyway good day everbody

Jeff

Jeff,
I agree and can take it even one step further if you want….According to the State Vet, I could simply just go to the sale/swap and walk around. I would not have to buy anything just go back home afterwards. By doing this I could contaminate my flock.
I’m not about to start wearing disposable booties at shows or have people wear them at my place, that’s just crazy. If it happens it happens I’ll just do the best I can within reason and hope for the best.
Chris

Chris, I had a neighbor who lives about 1/2 mile from my house, unknowingly bought home a couple sick birds and those same birds that didn't look sick or have any visible signs of diseases or illnesses infected his entire chicken yard that consisted of about 400 quail and 100 chickens. LSU had to come in with gear and remove some birds for testing. Shortly after, his flock of 500 all had to be culled. He only recently started another flock. He lost everything.

Hey y'all... new here, thinking (pretty seriously) of starting a little brood of chickens here in Carencro. Just want to introduce myself! We have 5 acres mowed here, and no animals yet other than the dog. Thinking of buff orpingtons (sp?)... maybe 6-8 to start?

Hi there, :welcome

You are right down the road from me. I live in Opelousas.

Buffs sound like a great starter bunch. They are a good breed to have. Great number to start out with.

This thread has a lot of great people on here who are surely chicken lovers. You will love it here.

Welcome again! :frow

I know that things will happen and our animals get sick but I try my best to protect them from any illnesses or diseases. I know that we cannot control what happens but I feel that we play a part in the health of our animals. I do not let people onto my property (I don't have a people friendly yard-by personal choice- I don't like having visitors anyway) without them putting on blue shoe covers that I provide for them to wear. Most of the people that come to my house are customers coming to buy eggs or whatever it is I am selling and most of them have chickens. Because I have not been to their house to see how they care for their animals, I do not trust that their animals are 100% disease and illness free. I simply explain to them that I am NPIP certified and I am advised not to let ANYONE walk around in the chicken yard or the area my animals free range for fear of droppings or transferring other diseases to my yard. I have not had a problem at all and no one has refused and I have had returning customers. Once I tell them, they are amazed and tell that that what I am doing is a good thing. In fact, the idea that I am NPIP and word is out that I am VERY "clean" is where I get my customers. The first thing that I am told is that someone told them about me and told them how clean my cages, coops and chicken yard are. I have a little over 250 animals and I have invested a lot of time and money and I consider them a wise investment. I try to provide them the best care and protection possible. Now there are some things that I can't control as far as wild birds, raccoons, opossums and other wild rodents coming into my yard and leaving infected or diseased droppings, so those are situations that I can't worry about (but I still do) and the State Vet tells me this as well.
The shoes that I wear are only for my yard and chicken yard. I do not wear any of these shoes to the feed store or anywhere else. I remove all store clothes when I get home because there are only certain OLD clothes that I wear in the yard anyway. It's a habit, so I don't think twice about. It's just a routine. When I go to someone's house that has animals, I bring my own shoe covers. I respect that person enough to not put their chickens or other animals in jeopardy and because I don't want anything entering my truck from the bottom of my shoes and me transferring that to my yard. Sure, some people may say that it's over kill and everyone has their opinion.
I have only attended 1 chicken show and that was the one in Monroe and I didn't allow those shoes to touch my yard or chicken yard. That is the only chicken show that I have attended and I don't expect to attend too many because I don't really purchase chickens from other people. I'm too scared.

I'm not taking any chances. If anything wiped out my 126 chickens, 13 Geese, 13 BR Turkeys (8 poults), 49 Muscovy Ducks (6 ducklings), 24 guinea keets and 4 Peafowl because I wasn't careful and let my guard down, I would be devastated.

I have customers call me and tell me that they lost their entire flock because of some sickness and want to buy some chickens from me. I just cringe in fear.
Everyone will have their own opinion about NPIP, precautions, what to do, what not to do, etc. It's a personal choice and I respect everyone's views but for me, I can't take that chance to let my guards down. Someone on this forum (I posted the link in my other post) did and he had to kill every single one of his birds because of it. I don't want to have a Part 2 to his post.

I completely respect your opinion and what you do with your animals and place but it’s a little different for me, my family and my situation. For starters, I have sick animals at my place all the time. Not our animals but customer’s animals so that’s simply a way of life for us. The sick animals coming over to our place is part of what allows me to have my chickens to begin with. My wife goes from barn to barn for a living and god only knows what she comes into contact with. The same goes for the State Vet that was at the house on Friday doing the NPIP testing. I’m not going to meet him at the gate and spray him down before he comes on the property no more than I would my wife. We also have people over at our place all the time….family, friends, neighbors, customers ect ect. the list is long and it goes on and on. Personally, I like that, I like having people over to visit. I would gladly give up the birds given the choice between people coming over or owning chickens. But then again, this is a hobby for me and not a means of income that I depend on.

I simply do the best I can do at keeping my animals fed, protected, clean and smelling fresh but that’s all I can do. I’m not going to be a prisoner to any of my hobbies particularly to these chickens. Part of my enjoyment is watching the kids that come to visit play with the birds and collect the eggs. I have not sold one egg, nor do I plan on it. I give more birds away then I sell and I doubt that these things will ever change. In my opinion people can and do go over-board with everything, church, politics, health and owing chickens but who am I to say anything about what you or anyone else does. I can only tell you about what I do and if you don’t like that, well that’s your choice and I’m ok with it.

Of course I don’t want my flock to get sick and die, none of us do. If what I’m doing is not enough and it happens…I’ll deal with it, learn from it and move on.

Yes, we surely have different situations and we all have to do what is best for our individual situations. ;)

Ok folks I need to put a little input on this NPIP. First off anybody selling a chicken or any other fowl or eggs across a STATE line that is not NPIP is breaking the law. It is required to ship either in almost all states. I ship eggs and birds daily and dont want fines or anything else so thats the main reason I am NPIP I also know that bio security is a viable argument to a point but you cant control everything. I personally dont let anyone in my pens mainly because I have quite a few wild breeds and expensive breeds that I cant afford to replace if I lose them for something simple as that. I also dont buy from anyone that isnt certified just for the sake I know some of the known issues wont be present. I quarantine any bird that come from somewhere else also. Julie has a leggit reason for what she does and not everyone has those reasons so wether you choose to be NPIP or not or as bio protective, is each persons perrogative and what suits there needs :) That said I believe all sellers should be certified and the sellers and breeders that are not should be and no one should actually purchase from one that doesnt have the respect to test their flocks. I am not speaking of backyard hobbiest I am speaking 100% on breeders. The laws state you are supposed to be and I personally feel if you are ducking the testing theres probably a reason.

Welcome to the newbies

Congrats on the hatch missy told you you were gonna love that bator

Hope everyone else is fine and ready for more storms

Still lookin for whiskeybay if anybody runs across her.

I agree with all this. If you are doing this for profit than yes you should obey the laws and be tested, I have no problems with this. I got tested and I'm just a backyard hobbiest at most. My point was just that... bio security can drive you nuts if you let it. So, depending on your operation and what your doing it will be different for everyone. I have a unique deal going because of my wife and her job and this was just one of the things that I talked to the State Vet about. He agreed...I can only do so much before it drives me crazy. So I do what I can with in reason and sleep well at night knowing this.

It's all good.... I'm not knocking anyone!
