"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi I'm obviously new to the site and forum. I will be moving to Lafayette, La in Oct and want to start a little farm when I get back home. I was wondering what breeds do the best down in Lafayette and in Louisiana in general since I am new at this.

Oh, BTW, my name is Lisa and I am active duty Navy stationed in Oak Harbor, WA. I have a five month old son who loves all animals so far (he loves the feel of chicken feathers under his hand and loves to pet my friends silkies :) ). I also have a cat who knows who's in charge (her!),and a foster dog named Grace that I'm helping rehabilitate for a rescue up here called Happy Tails Happy Homes. Hope everyone has a blessed day.

:welcome

As far as what breed, I think it's entirely up to you and what breed you like, your purpose for the breed (pets, meat, eggs, breeding, selling, etc.) Have you decided on your purpose as far as having chickens. Do you want a breed that will supply both eggs and meat for your family? It's all up to you.

BABIES EVERYWHERE!

How many do you have now?

I have one hatching now, two more on lockdown.

Chris - the pics of your little girl and the horses are adorable! Did a photographer take them or are you that good with the camera?
A girl that works with my wife took them for us. She is not a pro, just a hobby that she likes to play with.

Yes she is "must take after her mother for sure" I've seen Chris' picture before(made a copy and put it out in the corn patch as a scare-crow) Naw I'm kiddin' with you Chris she is a sweetie in those pics for sure looks like a future Barrel racer/pole-bender heck maybe even a calf roper you got yourself there, ol boy.

On a different note there Chris, those RIRs are sure growing fast and I think I'm gonna get me a good group of breeders out of them looks like so far, thanks for sharing with me.

Jeff
Oh, yea Jeff....she def looks like her mother, smart like her too!!

I'm glad that the reds are doing good for you. I should be getting my new crop of RIR's any day now just waiting for a call telling me that they are on the way!! Well, my older BR's are finally starting to look like something. I can't wait until they are a full size birds!!!! I also have the ones from Jeremy that are still under lights so I have 18 BR's now all from that same line. Next year should be a lot of fun between the NH's, RIR's and BR's that I have. Come to think of it, I should have some NH's hatching by the end of the week.

Love the little Lamb!

By the way, how is that Roo I gave you doing? He should be really colorful by now. Boy his brother is huge!!! He is almost bigger than my oldest Roo and he is not even 6 months old yet!!!

Chris
The rooster is beautiful and HUGE! Question though, is it normal for their comb to be a little floppy as they are growing?
