I have a question for those that raise ducks, goslings, etc... When can you let them get into water after they've hatched?? I've never had ducks before so I'm not really sure!!

Thanks!

I can only speak about ducks... And It depends... Most folks say wait a week or three. I waited until they were about a month to give them water playtime. You have to be careful they don't get chilled or drowned. Thus the waiting on my part, and the. They only got in for a couple minutes each.

Thanks! Wasn't sure! I've got to do some serious reading up on ducks and turkeys!!

Mine were in the water a day after hatching lol. As long as they are able to dry off afterwards they will be fine.

I think everyone probably will have a different opinion. I don't let them in the water until a couple months after they have hatched. I usually put them in small swimming pool and I watched them swim. I let them swim for about no more than 30 minutes and take them out. I will do this several times a week. I'm a little over protective when it comes to the ducks and goslings. I know other people let them in the water after a couple weeks. Just depends on what you are comfortable with.

Yes, you have your hands full with reading up and learning. :)

I brood mine for 2 weeks and out they go. I have hens that hatch their babies and she heads straight to the pond with them within minutes after being hatched. Like Gracie said its not when they can go swimming its more a factor that they can get dry after. Never let ducklings swim alone until they get all that figured out :) Most of my ducklings are on the duckling pond at 2 weeks until they are big enough to get out on their own and then are free range on the bigger pond.

My duckling pond.

Gracie - the babies are sooo cute! The more I see pics of everyone's sebbies, the more I want one or two, but I am clueless about geese. Are these friendlier than the horror stories I hear? I also don't have a pond and would feel pretty bad about having geese without one. Isn't that a good reason to talk me out of wanting them?
