"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Ok everyone, I have some good news and some bad news. I will start with the bad news first and then tell you the good news.
The bad news is that I took some pics on yesterday but I forgot my camera at home.
Now on to the good news.......................................

When I got home on yesterday and checked my broody hens, I picked up a hen and noticed that she was only sitting on 1egg. It appeared that 1 of the eggs was missing from a hen that was setting on 2 pea eggs. I immediately became disappointed because I thought that my murdering hens had cracked open another egg and ate it. As I raised her up a little more, I saw a perfectly hatched egg with no chic. I got disappointed yet again because now I'm thinking that my thuggish hens and turkeys came into the hen house and dragged the baby out of the nesting box and killed it. As I felt under her more, I saw a fuzzy butt pointed right at me. The fuzzy butt fell from the back of the hen and lo and behold it was a PEA BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was soooooooooooooo happy. It must have hatched throughout the day because it wasn't there on the previous night nor was it there when I checked that morning. It was fully dry. It's BIG!!!!!!!!! And the feathers look like that of a 2 week old chicken. Terri, the wing feathers are LONG !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked to see such a difference in a chicken, turkey and pea chick. And the feet are HUGE!! It reminds me of a 13 year old that wears a size 17 shoe.

So, I immediately took it and brought it inside and put it in my brooder. Since it will be alone for now, I had to get out the marbles to put them in the water and feed to try to convince it to eat. At 9:00 PM, it kept chirping and didn't want to settle down. I know that it can go without food and water for a couple days but I didn't want to take the chance I boiled a guinea egg for it and put the yoke in the brooder. As soon as I set that yolk down, it TORE IT UP !!!!!!!!!! The poor little fella was hungry. Gosh, it had only hatched earlier that day. I thought it shouldn' t he that hungry. So Terri, keep an eye on your pea chics as far as how soon they begin eating. Anyway, after it ate the yolk, it stopped chirping. So, he took a nap and was up piddling around. I was a nervous wreck all night worrying about the little fella.
I woke up this morning and he was up and at'em. I picked up some of the yolk that was still in it's brooder and it began to eat out of my hand.

He is sooooooo cute!!
I wish that he had a pea buddy. Maybe the other eggs will hatch and he can have a buddy. I have 3 pea eggs from the original bunch still under my broody hens and have added more pea eggs under some hens. The pea eggs in the incubator are scheduled to hatch on the 15th. Terri, when is lock down for your pea and guinea eggs? Humidity in the incubator has been great. It's registering between 43-50. I am soooooooooooooooooo hoping all of the pea eggs hatch.

I wished for at least 1 pea egg to hatch and it did. So, if no others hatch, I'm ok with that.
I will post pics of the little fella on tomorrow.
Thanks to all who wished me good wishes and luck on the pea eggs. This little fella heard you.

OH NO!!! Sorry to hear that. And yes they are sooooooooo much harder to raise but at 6 & 8 weeks, they have passed that "hard to raise" age. I wonder what happened to them. They didn't get wet did they? Did you all have bad weather there on yesterday?
Missie, that is just heartbreaking. I hope your others are OK.

It really is!! What's so aggravating is that if it was them getting wet how do you prevent it?? When we first put them in the coop/run we'd go out there every night and put them in the coop. One night it STORMED and the hubs went out there stuck them all in the coop. I went out there a few hours later and they were all on the ground under the coop. So here we go again putting them all back in there. Now they like roosting on top of the door and they don't even go in the coop.

I'm just not sure what else to do. All the others seem fine!!

Thanks!! We don't have a pond either!! :hu  I've found out alot of people have ducks, geese, etc. without having a pond. I know Julie uses the small blue kiddie pools!! I need to go get a few more of them before they quit selling them!!

So do you use a coop, run and then put the kiddie pools in the run? I would love to see photos of your setup or Julie's. I wish someone sold duck eggs at the Farmers Market. I want to use them for baking. Then I wouldn't need to buy ducks!

I am grateful for autospell. Ducks was almost with a "i" instead of the "u". Yikes!

I put out kiddie pools for the chickens & the peas -- will try & take a pic -- during the short time I had ducks a couple years ago (Indian runners) I had a pool for them -- golly did they keep it nasty!!! had an inch of mud in it every day!!!
