"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

They are truly adorable peeps.

How many breeds of birds do you raise? I just recently purchased 3 Amerucana pullets that turned out to be EE's and two we're roos to boot. I can keep one but the other has to go as I only have 13 ladies. I'm not interested in breeding, just wanted enough eggs for friends & family and a few for color & flair.

Need a rooster by any chance ;-)?
I currently have Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires, Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons all heritage birds from show lines. They truly look nothing like hatchery or feed store birds. Unfortunately I don’t have any birds together breeding right now and I’ve sold all the chicks that I had to sell already except for some Sizzles that I am still hatching out. I’m not planning on breeding anything to sell until maybe next Spring but I may have some chicks to give away in the next few months. These will be mixed birds, the results of a project that I will be working on. I have been in the process of building a bunch of new pens and getting things in order chicken wise, for next year so breeding right now is not a priority for me.

On the price of the Sizzles, I have not really thought about it yet. Let me see what I end up with after all the eggs are finished hatching and I know where I stand. I’ve hatched just over 50 chicks in the last few weeks and only about 20 of them were keepers with the feathering that is desired. I have 13 chicks that hatched Monday, about 16 eggs still in the bator and 7 under a broody hen. I can’t really tell if they are keepers or not until they are a week or two old….that’s why it will be a couple weeks before I’ll know where I stand.

Just check back with me in a couple weeks. The only thing that I will be getting rid of between now and then are the chicks that turn out looking like Silkies.

I haven't been on in a few days and oh-my-goodness!

I sure do need to catch up on the thread. The kids and I were sitting at the dining room table just now and we saw a huge coyote trot all the way across 10 acres of open field.

It ran along the tree line to the North of us and right into our blackberry bushes. I cannot believe we have coyotes out here. He ran within yards of the coop. Eh. It was truly a beautiful animal, but now I know why our dog goes crazy tracking something around the coop when we let her out.

Coyote?

Chris, They are the cutest chicks I've ever seen. I can already see that I'm going need a bigger coop and the first one isn't finished yet. I would love to have a couple of Cochins. Are you expecting Cochin babies soon? I work in Covington and live near Folsom.

I use the nipple waterers and they are great. No messy water and no dirty containers. I've got mine on the bottom of a 2.5 gallon bucket. My chicks got used to them from an early age, so I don't know how easy it would be to train grown chickens.

I just ordered a bunch of them it seems to be the way to go and my chicks are only 10 weeks old. I think they will take to it. Have a few 5 gallon buckets laying around im gunna use. I tried to make a waterer out of a 5 gallon bucket and a oil pan but to make a long story short i did a couple things wrong and i ended up just getting really POed so im gunna turn it into a hanging feeder.

Grown chickens pick up on it quickly too. The nipple water system is such a lifesaver!

Thought this was a bit funny:

I brought 2 pairs of sebbies to the Opelousas swap in May. A pair went to Mzstre and the other I sold to a local man who was selling chickens there. I got a call from him last week being accused of selling mixed breed geese!

He obviously wound up with a smooth breasted gosling (my gander is smooth breasted). He wasn't ugly about it or anything, but he also wants me to go to his place and re-sex them. He can't tell the difference when he and his daughter tried to vent sex them. Do you think I am wrong if I tell him to DNA sex them if he has an issue? Vent sexing isn't always exact, and I told him this at the swap. I am pretty good, but I wouldn't say I'm always 100%. He also was mad because one of the white goslings I sold him had some light gray feathers. A little quick research shows that this is typical juvenile female feathering that usually molts out, but I'm sure the man thinks that I've robbed him!

I also sold some pure BW Ameraucanas last month. The girls had been abused by my rooster and were starting to molt so they were looking pretty rough. I explained to the people about the molt and showed them some pictures of the girls in good feather. They happily took them home. They were SUPER nice, but the called after a week wondering why they weren't getting any eggs. Apparently they bought these girls hoping they would lay piles of blue eggs. While they will lay the blue eggs, the pure bred birds aren't even considered average layers. Add on the stress from the move, the heat, and their current molt and I wouldn't expect eggs from them for a good while.

I feel so bad that these people are confused. Both are experiencing typical issues/characteristics of their breed. I try to be as helpful to my customers as possible, but am I out of line for thinking that people should do a little research into what they are buying before they make a purchase? I don't want people feeling like I swindled them!
