Hello BYC!

I just became the proud owner of a clipped 5 month old slate peach faced lovebird, don't know it's gender yet but the breeder I got it from thinks it's a girl. I've had her for 4 days now,and I've been trying to tame her,I try to get her out of the cage for one on one time every day as I know that lovebirds need exercise and interaction from their owners for at 30 minutes a day.But this bird is very skittish of my hands,no matter how gently I try to get her out!She is scared to death during these sessions and runs away from me!She gets 12 hrs of sleep and she has never once bitten me or threatened to bite me,but I know if I keep scaring her like this she will eventually. She is a very sweet bird in her cage, chirping and grinding her beak happily, and when we stand around her cage looking at her she shows off!playing with her toys, flapping her wings while chirping and running around the cage, always looking to see if we're watching.she is very entertaining and we encourage her to play!after she plays she goes straight to sleep grinding her beak. I give her two separate main meals with healthy treats between(we are trying to find out what foods she enjoys). I try to give her treats on my hand in her cage just far enough so she doesn't get scared and after several moments of indecision by walking back and forth on her perch she comes near my hand just far enough to stretch her neck for the treat without getting on my hand.but she doesn't take any treats if you give them outside of the cage poking it through the bars.So far this the only method that I can get her near my hand.Does anyone have any tips on taming a hand phobic bird? She is my very first pet bird and I spent a lot time researching and preparing and saving up for everything myself! I felt drawn the most to this bird, and my instinct is never wrong! I don't want any other bird!I love her very much.so please help me!

Lovebirds are hard to tame, but patience will go a long way in this endeavor. When I want to tame a parrot specie I clip them (done), and then take them into a room where everything is strange. By doing this your lovebird, hopefully, will see your hand as the least dangerous element of her surroundings. Do not grab her over the wings as this is very frightening to birds. Most cages come loose from their base easily-remove the top so that your lovebird is on the cage base with the top off. Slowly offer your hand and gradually scoop her up from underneath. It takes patience but keep at it until she sits on your hand/finger. And then just sit there with her on your hand softly talking to her. Words don't matter; it's the tone the will calm and reassure. Each day move more with the bird on your hand. Depending on the bird this can tame quickly or over a period of weeks. Most important-NEVER grab her around the wings as this will only reinforce her fear of hands and you.
