Loving family seeks advice on roo behavior...

Wow, Pipermark... thanks for telling me about the tendon thing when dangling a chicken. I got that advice from someone on this site, but would be devastated if I accidentally hurt my roo!

Hey--looks like I copied your name! (not on purpose!)
I think it is best to remember that most of the roosters personality and behavior is determined by his genes and not by how you treat him. He could turn into an aggressive young male despite how lovable he acts now. It is best to be psychologically prepared for that possibility, and know what to look out for so you and your kids are not suprised or hurt.

I stumbled over this old thread and thought if it might be helpful to others, I'd update a bit.

My fella is just as friendly now at nearly 10 months as he was back then. His beak never recovered more than to become fused on bottom where it had flopped around as 2 separate halves- I'm happy for this fusion, but it's never going to grow out to more than a 'chin,' and since the top beak is a good inch longer, he can't use the bottom at all as the top can't possibly meet it for pincer action. He must be tube fed.

He does dance occasionally near us, though never *at* us. It's to woo his girls, and he never mounts without dancing and getting a submissive pose from them. He is a lovely gentleman, and his flock of 12 love him.

He does occasionally flap and 'bang' his wings at me, when we're in the house for his feedings. He does it immediately prior to laying down on the towel I wrap him in to feed him, so it's not an aggressive thing. He is submissive to me at that time and I think he's just letting me know he chooses to cooperate on this nightly routine. He's 8-9# and could easily fight the tube feeding, but chooses to lay down in the towel each time.

He chooses to hang out with my youngest daughter. He is her special pet or I'd have called it quits on this daily requirement that prevents us from ever leaving town or going anywhere for more than 5 hours. He is a love and I'll continue as long as I can. He's healthy it may be years!

We never crow at him, as we want to encourage him NOT to crow. It is good that he is quiet.

I have to say, he will come over and lay in my lap if I'm sitting in the yard. He is a wonderful bird!

I don't have an answer for you since I am new to chickens myself... but I just had to say, I love the name Thurston Howell lll for your rooster! I hope his favorite hen is called Lovey!

My pastor has a roo that squats and does a dance with his wings out and down each time he approaches the bird. He wants to be picked up and loved on and that is what my pastor does each time.
