Low carb (very very low carb)

Oh really... is it fat free too? I'll have to look for it... is it in the freezer section?

I figure the chemicals are ok for a short amount of time. Really I only NEED it the first couple of days when I'm going through sugar withdrawls. Man that's a tough thing for me! I am extra grumpy and moody and all that. I'm on day three and was just a huge B--ch to my DH. I love my sugar fix! Ahhhhh.

Have lost about 30 pounds on a low carb diet - but I still haven't lost that sweet tooth and I can't hack the artificial sweeteners (or stevia, either). That chemical aftertaste is just nasty and unsettles my stomach. Splenda is just as bad as all the others.

Oh really... is it fat free too?

No. You don't want to cut healthy, natural fats like those in dairy. Those are the GOOD fats.

Oh... I'm getting my fat.... prosciutto, avocado, eggs, evoo..... so I figure since technically the first phase you're not allowed to even have the jello stuff I'd better keep my calories down. So I have to do it now, but I'll be trying it in phase II. Thanks for the tips. The problem with fat is there are so many calories in them. So it really reduces the amount of food you get to eat.

Anyone have any really great ideas on how to get fiber in you when you're low carb? Spinach has been my friend, but I am growing tired of it fast.

By the way today is day three and I've been doing weights for an hour a day and thirty mins of cardio.... yucky running

I'm going to start switching between the elliptical soon, but I've got to find some good books on tape first. Any ideas?? Anyway I'm already down 4 lbs... I'm just thrilled!

Oh no.... The real South Beach isn't focused on calories. That is my own addition.

He doesn't tell you to do that in any way. The only calorie he limits is snacks three times a day... 60 calories or 80 I can't remember, and as for meals you can eat a normal healthy portion size eating as much greens as you want. I just have to count calories since I need the fat to get me though the diet, and if I'm not careful it adds up fast and I don't want to diet and eat the same number of calories I normally eat (2000 or so). Plus I have to make sure I'm getting enough calories. My personal trainer also suggests fooling your body. You have to change the number of calories you have from day to day to prevent it from thinking you're starving yourself and then holding onto all the calories. So I'm changing that up each day. I plan to switch between 1000 and 1600 calories on random days.... trying to average about 12-1300 calories. It is a good number for me, just enough that I can function and work out as well.

I have never followed any diet fully, I really cherry pick information because of experience I know what results in a good diet for my body type. I have a difficult time processing carbs which is why I like the South Beach style diet.... and by carbs I mean sugar, and simple carbs (white bread, pasta et all).

Ok... now I'm reading your article... this is a fun discussion!

I did that for a while too. I'm so happy I've lost enough weight that I've gone down a size. Wahoo, back in my old jeans again. Been eating yummy salmon BBQed on an alderwood board with smoked salt.... and chicken salads with capers and shallots and olives (the fancy kind I can't remember the name), I made a souffle dish I've been eating for breakfast, and I baked it on a jelly roll pan and rolled it up... super great with a tad bit of yogurt.... mmmm. Oh and I thought I'd try that medication Ali.... it's working great so far. I haven't had any of the nasty side effects people talk about, but you can soooo tell it's passing the fat through you so I'm careful to only take it if I'm eating something lowfat. Anyway it's going well and I'm not yet a week into it. I love how I feel.... now when I run my knees don't hurt so bad.

Good luck!!!! Get a lot of cooking/ and veggie washing done ahead on Sunday so you're ready. I hate starting the first of the week. I mean by the time you get to Wed, isn't it bad enough you just want Friday to be here. Plus if you're moody no one at work will know.

DH and I are back on a low carb diet as well. We started just over 2 weeks ago He has lost 18 pounds so far and I have lost 12. I am tickled because of all the meds I take loosing weight is a challenge. I found this terrific site that has over 4000 recipes on it its called Lowcarbfriends.com I have been using alot of their recipes and its been very easy to lose the weight and not feel deprived.

So glad Eades has gotten off the shilling for his new cooker and back to regular articles.

Have you tried Whole Health Source or PaNu?

I do use the South Beach site for recipes to add to my collection - easy enough to alter them slightly. Also, for recipes: Kalyn's Kitchen. She has a great recipe for a quiche-like breakfast muffin that I really like.

We got into the low carb thing when DH's doctor put him on a statin and it physically ran him down - tired all the time, aching joints, sore muscles. He started reading up on cholesterol and a few other things, ditched the statin, started eating low carb and raised his LDL and HDL slightly but cut triglycerides in half, which is probably the better measure. In the last couple months there has been a slew of studies/info indicating that statins help men over 65 who have had previous heart attacks and not really anyone else - especially not women (as judged by ALL CAUSE mortality).

It also cut my 2 hour glucose tolerance test from 115 (borderline diabetic) to 88 (not even close).
