The reason my pet chicken price is higher is because they include the Run, and nesting boxes!!

One fact to remember is that My Pet Chicken doesn't net a lot of money through selling chicks.

If one wants the business to continue, then one must support it in other venues, also.
I quilt, and I'm surprised at how many women purchase fabric online for a cheaper price, after checking out the actual material at the local quilt store. We have several quilt shops that have closed shop because of this practice, I'm sorry to say.
So if we want a business to continue, then we need to support them in all ways.

Wow! Thank you to everyone who posted such kind words about MPC. We're really thankful for your support.

We hope to provide a comprehensive selection of items for people who want to raise a small flock of chickens. We try to make it easy, fun and as accessible as we can.

Rebecca's concerns are valid. To set the story straight, we sell the whole "kit" for $599, and it includes the Chick-N-Barn, Chick-N-Yard & 3 Nesting Boxes. The total cost at Critter Cages for these items, before shipping, is $473. However, we build part of the shipping price into our cost - shipping is more expensive on their site. Shipping to the east coast, for instance, only costs our customers $76. So the price difference is not as large as it seems. Our intention is never to gouge; our prices are somewhat higher A) because we're not -- yet -- large enough to command the same volume discounts as other places and B) because we have to have enough staff to answer chicken-related questions that are phoned and emailed in. Lots of these people never purchase from us, but we're able to help them thanks to the continued support of those who do. (And may we add that our customer service staff is entirely made up of terrific BYCers!)

Also bear in mind that if you purchase a coop, supplies and baby chicks all at once, it'll be cheaper with us than making purchases at several locations.

Hello! I wanted to add that I had a similar experience in exploring the costs of the chick N barn. I realized after reading the critter-cages and the mpc web site that mpc was selling the package that included 3 nests, and the chick n' run, and the critter cages site was selling each part separately. I purchased the mpc package because I want to support their company. MPC provides a wonderful service to chicken lovers that need small numbers, and their educational information is invaluable. I am not suggesting others make my choice - just wanted to provide my rationale.

I ended up purchasing other items from critter-cages - and they delivered a great product - in case this is helpful.

An aside - We actually reviewed the coop site on byc and found what I think is Dawn's site for the silkies. We put our chick n' barn up on a frame, and we are so grateful for her site! So I agree - it might not be what we would build if we had the time - but alas, we don't have the time!

BYC is SUCH a great group of internet folks - very helpful - and I think the same is true of the companies that provide the little stinkers and their supplies... *smile* Just wanted to pipe in.

JennyM - Hello! *smile* I think The MPC folks build part, but not all of the shipping costs into their price (see quote below). I read their post as stating that costs related to shipping are reduced because some shipping costs are incorporated into the cost of their chick n' barn package.

wingnut1 is correct. There is still a shipping fee, but it's less than critter cages. (I don't remember what critter cages is, but I recall it being around twice as much.) We found that people were very discouraged when the shipping cost was extremely high. So, we increased the prices of the barn and lowered the shipping.
