Lucky me

That's a nice score!
I use wood chips in my run and replenish them at least once a year.
My dad bought a small wood chipper at a garage sale and he lets me borrow it.
I cut down alder brush from around my yard and use it to make chips. It also works good for mulching around my rhubarb and other plants. Especially since it doesn't have the chemical dyes that many commercial mulches do.

Black walnut is toxic to other livestock, not sure about chickens.

I use some cedar as I have a bit of it on my lot, it's mixed in with other types of wood and I age it as well so it's lost most of the aroma. With good ventilation and mixed in with other materials I haven't had issue with the cedar.
