M. Gallisepticum in my flock. Safest way to repopulate?

Hi Schellie,
You're so sweet to check on me
smile.png

Kinda mopey today, but work will take my mind off of things. Picking up the ducklings tonight at work (friend hatched them out for her classroom). Told all of my duckling buyers the situation, and most backed out, quite understandably. One is still interested ,though. They only have ducks, so it's a good fit/safe, plus the babies were hatched out off my property and haven't been exposed. Not sure what I'll do with the remaining six, but I'm going to try hard to convince them to take all 12

.
Still haven't reached a decision as I keep going back and forth; closed flock. cull. closed flock

Will reduce my flock by at least 5, and go from there.
I just want to thank all of you for your input, personal experiences, and support. At least I'm not going through this completely alone.

And on that note, gotta leave for work. Have a cozy, if rainy, Sunday.

Edited 'cause I can't spell

Glad that you are hanging in there. I hope you come to a choice that you can live with. Good luck.

I am seeing a bunch of new people putting new chickens in with their older flock with no quarantine I think we will be seeing more post like this. I hope not.

You are definetely not alone and i am so sorry you are going through this.

I had one necropsied last week and it came back as a respitory infection. Because of the antibiotics they had just been on they couldnt tell exactly what it was. We had 5 roo from a hatch and 4 would have needed to be rehomed. I couldnt in all good concience (sp) rehome them, and i had quite a few already sneezing. We culled the whole flock this weekend.

We did keep the 4 that are in the playroom, in the house. (they were in the coop for less than 24 hours).

It was the most difficult decision i have made since i have owned chickens. Since then i have cleaned all shavings out. Shop vac'd, pulled out the roosts and some very dirty baseboards in the roosting corner to be replaced. I got rid of all the feed i had, and all the feeders/waters/feed scoop etc..are all in the run waiting to be soaked in bleach/water. I have oxine for disinfecting the coop, nesting boxes everything that is wood. The floor (cheapo linoleum) and half the walls (whiteboard) will be bleached. My husband is going to finish the roof in the run so it is all covered (we currently have chicken wire, he wants a solid roof). We will be practicing biosecurity here.

Good luck to you.

Sorry this happened to you, I made a post about quarantining new birds but no body has posted this scared me with reading all the new people just putting chickens in together not even waiting I am afraid we will be seeing a bunch of post about respiratory infections. and then antibiotics and I really am scared to buy birds or eggs from people. Will you read it and see what you think?

Is Will a member here on BYC? I'd like to talk to him if possible.

Today I picked out 5 of my least 'favorite' chickens; a roo and 4 hens, and brought them to work for my friend.
After reading back over this entire thread, and worrying about the possibility of buying eggs that could be infected, I am now thinking about doing the tylan thing and hatching out some of my own stock. I don't know, though. Would it be better to get hatching eggs from someone who thinks they have a clean flock, do the Tylan thing as a precaution and incubate? Or treat my own 'healthy' hens with denagard, tylan dip the eggs, incubate, and cull the adults? I've pretty much already decided to cull my entire flock, but am trying to plan out my restocking. I want to be as safe/clean as possible.

i would just close the flock and keep them as pets if it was me

i love my chickens far too much to cull them unless they are truly suffering

I am so sorry that this is happenning to you. It happened to me. I had one hen die and then the others came down with it. My flock was culled! Today in the mail I am getting new chicks and am so excited. During the 3 months that I waited I took the time to redo the coop and floor it. Put sand in the run and build a brooder inside the coop as well. I have stayed busy and all the time I seemed to hear the sounds of my flock. It has been hard but now I can see joy coming. I wish a happy ending for you too. I will buy denagard and treat my flocks from now on in the winter before our worst weather. Maybe I can prevent this from happening again. Gloria Jean
