Mad and frustrated at a stupid ad on TV! (RANT!!!)

Growing up we ate what was put on the table in front of us and our mom was a wonderful cook. If you didn't eat or finish your plate you went to bed hungry! My sister went to bed hungry alot!!!

I learned to like stuffed peppers and/or good old liver and onions.

My kids ate what was placed before them and so do my grandkids.

Babylady that brings up a whole new rant for me! School lunches and chocolate milk! We used to have chocolate milk once a month as a treat, now 90% of the milk served every day is either chocolate or strawberry milk with so much sugar it's awful!
When we have celebrations at school parents send the worst sugar filled colored yucky drink mixes! We have our NMSBA testing coming up and it will cover three weeks. I send home notes to parents to send snacks with their kids because I feel it's important to take a break during these long, miserable, tests and move around and have a snack. I suggest raw veggies, healthier crackers or something not filled with sugar,, they can't sit and concentrate when on a sugar high! I allow only water or Gatorade (too much sugar) to be brought into class to drink,, no sodas are allowed in our schools anymore, well not for the students anyway there is a machine in the staff lounge.
But come one,,, chocolate milk in the breakfast and in the lunch line every single day??

I remember getting 5¢ for milk each day from my Mom.
If we were lucky we found a couple pennies on the way to school and could afford the 7¢ for chocolate.

The rule on trying new things is that you have to take ONE bite, if you don't like then you don't have to eat it, but at least give it a chance.

Same here. And we had an additional rule. "If you act like a jerk while trying it, say yuck, stick out your tongue or do any other drama queen things, you have to eat a whole bowl".

You may have noticed that a lot of the foods picky people insist on eating are LOADED with sugar or other carbohydrates. These people are not picky, they are junkies.

I never did the one bite rule. Most people/kids who have already set in their minds they hate it will grab one bite, swallow it whole and then skip happily away from whatever they didn't want. I always told them you have to eat all of it this time, and then we'll talk if you really don't like it that much. But one bite? uh uh,,,, all of it, and I serve it, not them,, it will be less that normal, but not a micro-scoop either.

Edited to remove off topic material, let's keep this thread on track

And not trying to derail my original post further,,, My district is 100% free breakfast and free lunch. You don't even have to go to our school, if you walk in our door with a child 0 - 18yrs old, we will give them free, a breakfast or a lunch. The adult with them pays $1 for breakfast or $2.50 for lunch, I have to pay if I want to eat, I am staff. My gripe here,, even if a student eats breakfast at home, when they get to school they are served a meal they don't need or want in most cases. They can't say "No thanks, I already ate" so they take a meal, and walk by the trash can and drop the whole meal into the the can. And my district is how many millions in the hole?
I have a lunch group that eats in the classroom with me every single day. Some go get their meal and bring it back, others bring their lunch and hide like criminals so they don't have to go take a lunch they will throw away.
They are not supposed to share food, if they don't eat their apple it goes in the trash,, hah! Not on my watch it doesn't! We collect the fruit and save it for a snack for later and the rolls tend to end up chicken snacks. We have a code,, it's Cheepers! Someone takes a baggie,, and says Cheepers! That means slowly hide the chicken snack in the baggie! The kitchen staff know,, and they don't say a word,, my administration agrees that the loss of food and money is horrible in our cafeterias. If we didn't serve those who don't need the food, we wouldn't throw so much away. A lot of kids eat before school but a lot can't,, and I'm so happy we do serve them!

I can never please my whole family with just one meal. DH's favorite meal is Cajun. Mine is Mexican. DD is Chinese. DS1 is steak, potatoes and salad. And, DS2 is Italian. They don't even like the same things on pizza! But, I will not fix seperate meals. Our rule is if you don't like what is for dinner you can have a bowl of cereal (we don't have any of sweet stuff either, it's more like oatmeal). Also, at almost all dinners I serve at least two veggies and a salad. The rule is you either eat a salad or two veggies -- trying to get those five fruit and veggies per day in them. I get little backtalk from them.

They know it won't work with me.

This is my idea on families with mixed tastes like yours ChickensRCool, have each one's favorites on different nights but they all have to eat every night. If on Monday you have Chinese, everyone eats it, but then on Tuesday night you have Mexican, and everyone eats it, ,etc.

the one meal i made that every one likes is spaghetti & meatballs, DH eats everything, me all but the meat balls, DD no1 the noodles and melted cheese with the garlic bread, DS all, DD no2 noodles and cheese and a meatball sandwich. I don't have to make anything special but everone eats different
