Cull as in remove from my flock - sell off, not process.

I decided today that it was time to sell off some of my hens. They're coming up on their second birthday and I know they'll be slowing down on laying. It was hard to choose. I'd think "okay, I'll keep just my favorites", but my list of favorites kept getting longer.

When I told DH of my plans he surprised me by saying no. He's the one that has to pay for their feed (whether or not they're laying to help foot the feed bill), so I thought he would be all for it. He's not.
He said as long as I am still getting enjoyment from having the hens I should keep them.
So I guess we just started a retirement home for chickens.

although i know he enjoys them too. Like today..he came and told me how Pearl...(one of our older favorites) is SO smart...

He said he was opening the feed bag..and she was impatient waiting for him to open the bag.... so she grabbed the string that opens the bag out of his hand! and kept pulling the string and finished opening the bag.... then of course, because she was soooo smart...

He let her eat what she wanted right from the bag...
Hes such a dork..he even brought me in the string to show me!!

..and wasnt even trying to open the bag for him...

3 of my hens turn 8 years old this year, and I still get eggs from them. Last year at least 3-4 days a week I did.
2 of them are RIR's and the other one is an EE. When they molt in Nov they do not lay again till Feb, and so far this month one of the RIR's and the EE have been giving me eggs! I was wondering if they were still going to lay this year!!

Oh, Mr. Butthead has a home for life. That's been agreed upon since he was a buttheaded little chick.

Well here's the funny part. Yesterday at the grocery store I told DH that I thought I should buy an extra loaf of bread for treats for the girls since they are out of scratch and I don't want to go to the feed store until next Friday.
He told me not to get more bread, said my girls were spoiled. Then he told me to get them a box of cheerios instead. A loaf of white bread is $1; a box of cheerios is nearly $4. So they got cheerios.
