i LOVE magpies! a want ome really bad! but im in love with my welsh harlequins right now. lol! i love the welshies! you should just keep the magpies! lol! are they show quality???

I have two Magpies and 4 Khakis. Were I to do it over again, I would get all Magpies. They are much calmer, and have better personalities, than my Khakis. Khakis are much higher strung! And my hen lays a large egg 6 days a week without fail. She is inclined to go broody, so come Spring I am hoping to have more Magpies! But need to separate the birds since my Khaki drake is very "attentive" and bullies the Magpie drake even though the Magpie is much larger than he is.

They are straight from Holderread's flock, with the best markings I've seen anywhere other than Holderread. I chose four out of sixteen birds that were sent, so they are the best of the bunch that I ordered. However, I don't show and did not purchase ducklings out of his SQ breedings, so they might not win national awards. They would, however, probably do extremely well in local and regional competitions.

The drake has a few minor flaws that I overlooked because I wanted a blue rather than a black drake: He holds his wings a little lower than I'd like and he has a tuft of feathers that always sticks out (almost imperceptibly unless you're looking for it) at the back of his head. However, he has a terrific shape and amazing markings, and a great temperament. If I were breeding for show, I'd be tickled to start with these birds.

However, to answer the other suggestion. It is hard to give them up, but I have discovered that I really am a hobbyist and happiest when I have small groups of animals that I can give lots of special attention to. I need to downsize my flock and the Indian runners are just so funny... laughter trumps in my book. So the magpies are available and the runners are staying.

I'd be glad to help answer anything you wanna know about them!
Finding this thread made me smile...seems they are hard to get...or nobody knows about them?

I love my Magpies! They are so much easier than my Khaki's! Can only get them locally straight run though, darn it. Would really like to breed my hen and drake come spring, but then I would have to find a way to separate them from the flock. They certainly are not show quality, but I think they are wonderful and gorgeous!

I have two they are very cute and too much personallity for ducks.

This is their faforite spot and favorite pool even though they have a nice deep tub.

I have a crested magpie and like the others have said she's much more calm than my runner mix. When I come up to her she stops and squats down and lets me pet her, instead of running away like her buddy. She doesn't even quack unless something is really wrong. I'm not sure who's laying eggs in my yard but whoever it is does it almost every day!
