Many of you will recall that several weeks ago, Maggie offered free eggs from her Pure silkies and Araucana roo. I was one of the lucky winners
I was so excited when the 5 little eggs arrived, though a bit concerned over the shipping all the way from NY to Arkansas, even though they were wrapped very well. No doubt that was one bumpy and wild trip for those little eggs.
The eggs were treated with extra care after arriving, but imagine my disappointment when I candled at 7 days and saw only one egg developing. I didn't give up... kept all 5 eggs in the bator another week, hoping for a miracle. Again, I only found one egg developing. I finally tossed the other 4 and left Egg #5 in the bator with some silkie eggs I had ordered from another BYC member. On the side of Maggie's egg I had scrawled "NY".
Yesterday morning, my daughter noticed the NY egg had pipped. Last night (about 3 AM this morning!)... after hours of listening to this little guy peeping, and his pip not getting any larger, I helped the little fella out of his shell. He was perfect! He appeared very tired though and when I placed him back in the bator, he rolled over on his back, never even opened his eyes, and lifted his left foot and scratched the back of his head.
I bid him good-night and headed to bed about 4 AM.
When I woke at 7 AM... he was up and running around the bator. He is perfect in every way... 5 toes on each foot, black skin, legs, and feet, and a spot of brown under his beak. He's been named, "New York"
Thanks Maggie for allowing me to raise an offspring from your beautiful birds. "New York" is very special!
