Mahonri?? Dental Advice...

Can you give your pharmacy a call to see if they have it available?

As for wisdom teeth, it probably would need to be pulled.

Can I buy that at the pharmacy you think? I know someone already mentioned it, I doubt I could get some from another dentist at this point. I don't drive, my husband is over an hour away, and my own dentist is over an hour and half away... Lovely huh?

I would call the pharmacy... And chances are that you won't have any pain if you drink a cup of coffee - try a small sip first. I am always have dental problems.

Wax, and keep a little tube of Ambesol handy. Just eat and drink on the other side for now. If someone asks why your head is tilted, tell them you are channeling the chickens and trying to see food like they do!

Good luck, it's never as bad as we fear.

You should be able to buy wax at the grocery store, in the toothpaste isle. If only about the size of a pencil eraser broke off, chances are it can be filled or a crown placed. I have several fillings that are most of the tooth. But, plenty people have trouble with their wisdom teeth. Since its a wisdom tooth, it would probably be best to have it pulled, and cheaper probably, unless an oral surgeon does it. My dentist charges about $1000 for a crown, about $300 for a 2 surface filling. If more surfaces are broken, ie, more than say the side that touches your cheek, the price goes up. It could be a 3 surface. (top, side and between teeth.)

I will be having it pulled, they have been trying to get me get all four of them pulled for two years and I kept getting out of it... Too scared, and the insurance will not pay for me to be put under during the surgery. I can't think about it, I'm going to start shaking.

You should check with the dentist and see how much extra it is for you to be put under. I used to have an insurance that didn't pay for me to be knocked out, and it was only like $25 or $50 more for it. That's been a while though, and I'm sure it depends on a lot of factors. But it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Keeping your wisdom teeth will most likely ruin your other teeth. There's a reason why most people get them taken out soon after they come in. If you have to get this one done anyway, you might as well get them all done, and save you the trouble of having another one break.

Demand Nitrous Oxide. It will probably leave you with a headache afterwards, but you won't have to be strapped into the chair (though you might think you're floating away...).

Would rather have `em `trach' me without Versed... (but he always lets us have the worn out picks and scrapers - great for cleaning up fossils).

my wisdom's were pulled while I was in the chair, with just a shot to numb me up... I didn't feel a thing (my teeth were pretty small but not noticably so)

When I was younger and had braces I always found the wax to be pretty insufficient, it's too soft. I used to chew up a bit of paper and cram it around the sharp bits. Sticks well, and it covers pointy parts better than the wax.

Jenna,

Have you found the wax at the pharmacy or had someone get it for you?

Back when I was on the farm we always had parafin wax for when we bottled jam.... you could use something like that... or even some hard sugar free gum if the jagged edge is hurting you too much.

More likely than not you had a cracked tooth or a Wisdom Tooth with some decay in it... thus the shattering to pieces when it broke off.. (Don't worry, if you swallowed it.. it will all come out in the end... :o) )

Perhaps you could have them call in a prescription of Valium or Ativan to take an hour or so prior to your arrival at the office. (Be certain to have someone drive you and bring you back)

See if they can give you nitrous oxide.... that almost always helps. I had a 20 year old drive all the way from Prescott to see me today about taking out her lower wisdom teeth. I remove them if they are easy, but if they are impacted or have curved roots, I refer them out to an oral surgeon. I took some x-rays and sent her to an oral surgeon that had some extra time this afternoon.

About six months ago I had a 19 year old young man come in to have his wisdom teeth removed. They looked very straight forward. I didn't even use nitrous on him. Start to finish they were all out in 15 minutes and he said he barely felt one of the 10 injections I gave him.
He went to work the next day and said he didn't have any discomfort.

SO, what I'm trying to tell you is, it's no big deal. Dentists pull so many teeth it just becomes very routine. Just relax, have some faith and know that we are all pulling for ya. (pun intended)

PM me if you have any more questions...

BTW.. there are two of us on here who are dentists.... chickygirl2 (Patty) is also a dentist who lives in Upper Marlboro, Md. (I had some ancestors who had land there in the 1700s)

Good luck and God bless.
