Hooray! A dozen lav AM eggs arrived from CrystalCreek today, all in one piece! Such lovely packing! I took pictures so I'd know how to do it when I ship eggs

Not really sure what kind of shape they're in. It may be the PO bounced them around pretty badly. It was also a good thing I was home today. Apparently they don't know what "call for pick up" means and the carrier dropped them off outside my door. If I hadn't been here they'd have been frozen solid by the time I got home from work

So quick question. I was planning on starting the bator Sunday, but would it be better to start these eggs tomorrow? I know they need rest a day, but probably not longer than that? I've got the bator running now. So I could go either way. I've got plenty of my own to go in with them.

The sooner the better. (After the settling period, of course).

Yep 24 hours for settling at max and then off to the bator. The fresher they are the better chance of hatch rate.

I never let my shipped eggs sit for 24 hours. Maybe 8 hours, but that is about it. Fresher is better, and I honestly don't see what sitting for 24 hours is gonna help. Just my opinion.

And I like to let mine rest at least a day...10 out of 11 and 4 out of 5 just now but the California post offices must like shakes because they sure can mess up shipped eggs.....

Ok, I'll set today, though I don't have to let the ones laid today rest do I? I'll be collecting about every hour so the ones from my flock don't freeze - stupid winter

( oh good - I didn't really want to wait until tomorrow!)

Nope you can pop in the ones from your girls fresh out of the chicken. Letting shipped eggs rest is to compensate for all of the juggling around the box (hence the eggs) get in shipping. I am a full week in to my Brahmas developing and I can't wait for the next two weeks to hurry up and be over so I can see the fuzzy butts!

I've been collecting eggs this winter and have pretty much incubated as long as they weren't frozen enough to crack the egg. Bitter, bitter winter here, but seems like they hatch fine as long as they didn't hard freeze. Even had quite a few hatch when I took 2 week old eggs out of the fridge to incubate for giggles, eggs that were laid in my unheated coop in subzero weather. I've actually been quite surprised how much cold tolerance I've seen so far.
