I hear ya! I always have clean nests and clean eggs UNLESS it is rainy or muddy outside. Then the girls get there muddy feet all over the eggs. I hate when that happens!

I did wash some eggs on my last hatch (5 of them). I wrote on them, "washed," to see if they would hatch. YES, they did hatch! I just used warm water (about 100* or so), and a washcloth. I dried them with a towel. I dunno the "correct" procedure, but that is what I did.

There are a few threads about washing hatching eggs.

Hmmm.... I am really considering this, but so on the fence about it. I've never had to wash an egg before. I've had some shipped ones come dirty before, but they have never been this bad.

I use those little scrubbies for dishes an pans on them. Some people use a fine sand paper, but I like these. I haven't gotten many dirty eggs (I will now that I said that) but I have gotten a few. I just lightly rubbed with the scrubby and they were fine. Sometimes you might have a stained egg, but wiping them will take off any crude.

Do you do this dry (adding no water)?

In most cases I've found that wiping them lightly with a damp paper towel will soften the gunk and then I can more easily wipe it off.

I follow the principle that airflow travels from hot to cold. I use a cold paper towel so the air in the warmer egg will push any contaminants out rather than sucking them in.

Good luck
